Can anyone please explain what is the difference between D and D4 on my Camry??The owners manual only says that D is for normal driving, but that D4 is also for normal driving but can cause more fuel consumption due to increased engine braking??
Im confused??? thanks for you help in advance.

D4 will only allow the transmission to shift up to fourth gear, whereas D allows it to shift into fifth.

In speeds under 60-65 I prefer to select a non overdrive position.Too much shifting in my mind wears a trans out faster.Besides,it puts the trans in a better gear for acceleration in case rapid scoot is needed.I remember the old days when companies like GM used to recommend their trucks never be shifted to OD when towing a trailer,to prevent frequent up/down shifts and overheating the trans fluid. Its bad enough to have a lockup converter, add OD and lockup and its just asking for a downshift.

+1 The transmission ECU will select the proper gear.

Exactly. Let it do its thing, until it's on a long hill and starts hunting between gears.
