I'm coming up to my first oil change on my 07 Accent GS Hatchback (1.6 litre). I've run the factory oil for the full 6,000kms (3750 mi) as per the manual. By, the way, the manual recommends Quaker State 5W-20 oil. Anyway, I've been stocking up on oil and filters over the last year and my choices are: Oil: Motomaster Formula 1 Full Synthetic 5W20, Castrol GTX 5W20, Pennzoil 5W20, and Quaker State 5W20. Oil filter choices are: Hyundai OEM, Super Tech (from my trip to Port Huron), Quaker State (Purolator).

What's my best option here?

They are all good choices. If you are sticking with 6k km changes, then I would shop on price. Canadian Tire puts its Syn on sale quite regularly, so you might want to look for sales on that and stock up. Thats probably what I would do with a new car - a cheap synthetic like Formula 1 or Tech 2000 (not avaliable in 5W-20, though) bought on sale......

Actually there is a Tech 2000 5w20, I was considering giving it a try in my wife's car before I eventually decided on Petro Canada 5w20.

Yup, I know there is a Tech 2000 5W-20, but NOT in the synthetic....I was refering to using Formula 1 syn, or T2000 syn in a new car.....

Sorry about that, I missed the part about you mentioning synthetic 5w20. I wonder if they'll come out with a Tech 2000 synthetic 5w20 anytime soon?

'02 accent 1.6 , IMO, avoid the supertech 6607 filter they show in the stupid walmart lookup book or computer. It's a little thimble size thing, you can see a spring bypass device on the inside of it. Besides it's small size (which doesn't always mean less media sq in) I've had about every 3rd one rattle on cold startup. My guess is the bypass is inconsistent or the spring binds or something? avoid it.

I've use a hyundai filter or a supertech 3593a, both are about the same size and have been working well. There may be some other fitments that work (7371 is a little bigger). But on the accent the filter base is real close to the alternator bracket so you need to consider overall diameter.

I've run 10w30 in mine most it's life, with one run of 5w20. No change in mpg. ALWAYS have got better mpg than the epa sticker said it would. 36-40 year round. It's been a great little car.

The 3593a is definitely the way to go. Same bypass and ADBV setup. It is larger in diameter and additionally has more filter media surface area. In theory this will give you better flow because there are more pores for the oil to flow through. In Canada, reguardless of season, 5w20 is the way to go, and it's also the factory recommendation (in the US anyways).

I'm no expert, but.....plain old Quaker State in the green bottle seems to turn out surprisingly good wear numbers in UOA's reported here and is also inexpensive and easy to find.

Quakerstate also has a 10 year 250,000 mile warranty if you use their oil and change it at intervals no greater than 4,000 miles.

As for filters, i tend to like OEM, WIX, Purolator, and SuperTech (in that order).

Didn't the manual say Quaker State? I wish my manual would recommend an oil so it would be easy for me to decide like this. USe the QS because it flate is pretty good.

Yes, in the oil section of the manual the Quaker State logo is prominently featured on the page and it states "Hyundai recommends Quaker State motor oil". I've never seen this before, except for a european Renault that recommended ELF.

In my dad's Volvo's owner's manual it says that Volvo recommends Castrol oils.
