06 lacrosse cabin air filter

I've been trying to get to the cabin air filter in an 06 buick lacrosse cxs, but the clips holding the cover (that's visible from the outside of the car under the windshield wiper, actually says to move the wiper to pull the cover off in the manual) don't want to budge. If I try to use pliers on it, it'd tear it up. Anybody have any tips for tools to use or ways to get into it? The owners manual just shows you what side it's on and says to pull the cover off..

I'm looking at either a Bosch P3720 for 12.99, Purolator C25245 for 17.88, or Fram CF8392 for 22.99 to replace the oem filter.. If I can ever get in there!

If no one here is able to help, I'd stop by the Buick dealership and ask one of the service advisors if he can give you any tips....especially if it is the same dealership that you bought the car from.

I get all of my cabin filters at NAPA. I definitely wouldn't be paying the most money for something from FR*M.

It wasn't all that long ago Purolator CAFs used to be not that much more $ than a regular automotive air filter! I've found the 'doors' to CAFs to be not all that user friendly and very brittle. Definitely don't mess with them in the cold. What a rip-off these filters are. Having them does make your dash less dusty, that's about it for most climates. I like the suggestion of just using furnace filter media, cut to fit, instead of a lousy $25 air filter that will be filthy in a few months.

I use a pliers on mine. If my '00 Monte Carlo is fastened the same way as yours (Monte and Lacrosse are both on the W-body platform and my filter is in the same location) you want to use either a small flat bladed screwdriver or a needlenose pliers to pull out the center pin in that plastic fastener. Think of that fastener as working like one of those plastic drywall anchors that expand out as you drive a screw into them. Only on your car, the center piece is a plastic pin instead of a screw.

The pin is keyed, by the way, so it only fits in one way and can only pull straight out.

Thanks for the info, I got the pins out last night with pliers. It was tight though because the wipers won't stay in the upright position when I turn the key off.

Which brand filter do you use? I looked at the Purolator in Advance Auto Parts and the media was so thin that in the pleat bends you could see holes through it..
Carquest didn't have them in stock but they are ordering one of for me. They said Wix makes their filters so hopefully it'll be a little thicker.

I used a Fram the last time I changed the cabin filter, wasn't sure I had one at first. Silly me.
I found it to be well made and cost less than those at the auto parts store.
Fleet Farm is a area chain around here that has the orange wall,(Fram).

Disregard what I said about the Purolator. Went to a different Advance Auto to get some more of the buy one get one Valvoline and looked at one of those cabin air filters again. It looked about the same as the oem one I finally got to the other day.. Must have found a defective one at the other store.

Haven't been able to find the Frams around here, only reason I'd like to try one is because of the charcoal it has in its media that's supposed to "help control odors".

The cabin filters I have replaced in my 2005 Cadillac CTS were made by MirconAir. The OEM filter was, the replacement AC Delco was and the current Wix is also.
