I'm also curious about the LC20 factor. I've been using it for 25,000 miles now, but it's effectiveness/helpfulness remains inconclusive in my personal UOA history.

If you have long-term plans for using LC20, you ought to stick to your current regimen until the UOA metals stabilize. In the meantime, figure out which oil is your favorite flavor, and then start uppping the doseage. This is a very agonizing process if you lack patience.

I agree V1. The analysis recomends the doseage of LC20 at this point to be 1 oz. per quart at fill but 3 oz. every 1000 miles. I'll stick with Havoline for now and see how it does the next time or two when those metals stabilize. Actually, this is still an engine breaking in.

I've got an '05 Honda Pilot (V6) with 15,000 miles on the engine, after using dino oil (Exxon Superflo 5w20) for about 4500 miles, my copper reading was only 19.

This should dispell the myth that ALL honda v6 engines should have copper readings above 30 for the first 30,000 miles??

That's what I heard too. What exactly is the significance of the copper number? Is it strickly an indication of particle/metal wear?

I am begining to wonder if it really does have to do with the oil filter....

jayjr98,
on that Pilot, did the oil filter get swapped out at each OCI? Actually how many times has the oil been changed on the Pilot?
Very low miles I see.

I think martyi's copper readings went down faster than mine and it is of note to me that he took a year to get to his first OCI vs. me dropping my FF in a few months.

i.e. the whole discussion of a oil filter getting 'better' over time and i.e. the Honda change the filter every other OCI recommendation.

At first, I tried following the severe maintenace schedule for the first 3 oil changes (3750 mile OCIs). Then after the third one, I decided to push it upwards to 5000 mile OCIs. I ALWAYS change my filter when I do my oil and have used nothing but Genuine Honda oil filters.

3,716 Castrol GTX 5w20
7,446 Mobil Clean 5000 5w20
10,799 Exxon Superflo 5w20
15,364 Exxon Superflo 5w20 (UOA Performed at this change)

The Pilot was 14 months old when I did the UOA.

The copper is due to chemical leaching and is highly dependant on the specific basestock and/or additive chemistry in the particular oil.

The real litmus test for any oil is the rate of iron wear, which is almost entirely a function of additive chemistry (and additive cost).
