Run the 4.0 Explorer about 15miles each way to work daily. Now and then a little country cruise to get some groceries on the weekend which consists of maybe 25 miles to and from. Vehicle has 84,327 miles and I have been running Castrol GTX Hige Mileage 5W30 since 74some odd thousand miles. Usually at cruise speeds of 65-72 mph during work week all straightaway to work. Soo far does not leak or burn a drop of oil on 4000 mile changes. Manual calls for 5w30 and my question is---what would use suggest for oil that I run to keep it running like a top?

Any 5w-30 with the API starburst will keep it running for the next 150,000 miles just fine.

I would be much more concerned about the ATF

If you still have the original ATF and spark plugs in there, consider replacing them. Clogged cats or a burned up clutch pack can make it run badly even if the engine itself is in stellar condition.

Be careful changing the plugs, they have a tendancy to break during removal.
Ford have got a TSB covering this aspect.

But do change the ATF. I did against the dealer recommendation(they didn't think it necessary) and the car is transformed.
Your engine oil is probably least of the problems with this vehicle.

I used Super Tech Syn 5-30 and MotorCrfaft filter on my 02. I sold it at 165k and it's clean as new. New buyer I know, he plans same routine.

Always did plugs/wires every 60-70k. Explorer 6cyl easy. Its the 8cyl 04-06 from Ford you need to be cautious of.

Changed out the plugs with Bosh Platinums around 55thousand. Last month I called the dealership about how the go about there ATF change--"if they drop the pan and change the filter?" Was told the strictly only do flushes unless they hear any strange noises or broken parts internally! So I had it flushed and replaced with Pennzoil Synthetic ATF around 78thousand miles at a quick lube Transmission shop my buddy manages. Its paid for and I want to run,run and run this Explorer for a long time hopefully!!!

Keep up the fluids and the 4.0 should get you 200k soundly. My 97 went 210k and was crashed. The 02 I had is getting on 170 and running strong. The trans just went but new owner had a new one put in. Engine looks like it's brand new. Didn't have any other issues with it.

I have one like this. Same year engine and almost mileage, 83,000. I use 5W30 PP and a Pureone, 8,000 mile OCI. Changed trans fluid at 75,000 miles. Original plugs. Runs like new.
