So can anyone tell me at what temp a 20 grade becomes too thin to protect.
This hemi runs really hot. Hotter than anything I've ever owned. At 70mph cruising on the highway I've got 220 degree oil temps and 48 pounds of pressure.
So at what point does the oil film strength degrade. I'm not sure if this car is equipped with an oil cooler. I'll look more closely when I change the plugs. I'm seriously considering adding a couple quarts of a 40 grade just to enhance film strength at operating temp.
My mustang only got to 190 and 45 pounds at 70 so oil film was stronger since the oil temp was lower.
What's everyone think. Anyone with a hemi charger out there got any advice to give.

Thanks

And I've got 15 jugs of ultra 5w-20 I was going to use in this car. Is it stout enough at temps that high and should I maybe add a quart or 2 of something thicker. Sump is 7 quarts so 5 of those 7 will be ultra.
I'm looking forward to seeing if mos2 helps anything in this regard. I'm glad to have a digital readout so any differences will be just a click away.

As you already know the 20w does just fine in this motor. 220 is not too hot for any modern oil, even dino. Think of it as a cleaning process, removing all moisture! I saw 300 degrees at the track and was told by M1 that was nothing to worry about.

The engine has huge bearings and has been proven quite durable. Drive it hard and enjoy...

No oil cooler, but easily added from the police catalog.

I don't think that's an accurate conclusion. To my understanding, your oil pressure is what really counts. If you have 48 pounds of oil pressure cruising at 70 mph, that's probably PLENTY. Consult Dodge service information to see what the specified oil pressure should be. This engine should run just fine on 5W-20, especially Pennzoil Ultra 5W-20, with it's slightly higher 2.7 cP HT/HS (compared with most 5W-20s).

Thanks guys.
I changed my plugs yesterday to e3 brand. Again a bit more pep.
Anyways the rear 2 cylinders had engine oil on the threads, but not the tips. Is that a gasket failure?
