5,100 mile OCI with Pennzoil 5w-30 SL with Purolater Oil filter.

80/20 Hwy/City useage. Temps in 70s to over 100 for most of it. Nothing added to oil or any added to OCI. Used about 1/4 quart.

81k total miles on car.

Fram Air filter with 35k on it. Average MPG of this UOA was 44.05 with a high of 46.33.

Put in Havoline 5w-30 DS and another Purolator oil filter for the next OCI.

No TBN ordered (its hard to even justify $20 for a UOA...)

Here is the UOA.

Thanks in advance for any comments!

Hi Bill,

Thanks for posting your UOA. I was wondering, I thought I read in your last post of an UOA that you had put a synthetic in and were going to run it longer? Did I remember that wrong?

I am currently doing a synthetic experiment in my rolla. So far I haven't noticed any real significant difference from the dealer bulk oil that preceded it. I think it might be quieter at lower rpms. I am trying PP 5w20. I didn't find any UOA with any 5w20 so I wanted to see how well it would do. I posted a UOA of the bulk dealer oil. I am not sure how conclusive my results would be since I just crossed 6k miles total. But it should at least be interesting. I also bought enough oil on sale to do 3 oci. I plan on getting a UOA of each. I was also thinking about my report and I am not certain that they changed my filter even though I asked them too.

Thanks again. I always look forward to hearing about your rolla.

blackstone's comments about fuel dilution seem goofy to me. the car is raking in 44 to 46 mpg when it is rated at 40mg. You must not be wasting too much fuel in the oil. 80% highway to boot. doesn't all dino sheer after 3k miles anyway?

I'll answer all of the questions in this post! (thanks again for the replies/comments)

So if you could only use one dino, which would it be?

I really don't think it matters that much. I've had excellent UOAs from Pennzoil, Mobil DC, Castrol GTX, QS, Chevron and Havoline and excellent service from all of those plus Valvoline for the last 30+ years that I know todays oils are excellent.

If I *had* to go to Wal-Mart and pay retail off the shelf, I'd prob say that you would see me buying either Pennzoil, Havoline or QS. GTX would be up there too.

Hard to say!

Nope, ran some Supertech Syn in it for a little over 5k and then Pennzoil (this UOA). Did not get a UOA since I decided that I was not getting any value of it (as far as running it again since its pretty pricy) and I did not see any improvement over any other oils I've run (car running any better, MPG, etc).

Have you tried using 5w20 oil to see if you can squeeze a bit more gas mileage out of your Corolla ??

Nope. I'm seeing excellent results with good old 5w-30 and Toyota did NOT back spec my 05 for it. (must be for a reason)

I think I'm getting the most out of my 14k car! The last tank was 46mpg and since its been 100+ everyday for the last 3 weeks and when I get off work around 70-80s, I've been leaving the AC on all the time.

So much for AC killing your MPG!

Esp since I changed the oil right after driving home from work at 6am with the outside temp being 80s and 50 miles on the highway then 2 miles on city streets till home. I idled it for maybe 3-4 mins while I got the ramps out and drove it up on them..

The oils *may* shear, but for me (and these cheap UOAs that you should not trust..

) if the UOAs are doing good, I'm not concerned with the "shearing". I know when I had Terry read a few, we talked about it. I'm not concerned.

btw, your UOA is excellent

Thanks!

(BTW: the car is rated for 41 mpg! )

Well if they won't give you any gold stars, I will another great report

Oh well, maybe next time!

Thanks again all!

I noticed the same with using my Air conditioning. Even with it on, I still get way above EPA averages in my car (34-40 mpg!) However, when I try to accelerate with it on, it kind of bogs down. But if you have the car at an already constant speed I don't notice any MPG difference.

nice utah!! as you know my gf has the same car as yours but her is automatic. she doesnt get the gas mileage you get for sure but she doesnt know how to drive anyway haha.. looks like penzoil and gtx are your best for that car. ill just find one on sale and go with it..

i just wish someone would do a dino test for a v6 tacoma for 5k miles

Isn't it interesting that the Havoline DS he used in his Outback (report posted), and this Pennzoil have almost the EXACT same add-pack? Look at the Boron and Moly numbers!

It's like when Havoline 'upgraded' their oil, they just used the same add-pack as Pennzoil, and then called it 'Deposit Sheild'!

Unreal mpg Bob.

I'll have to steer my girlfriend towards one of these cars.

Your doing about 12mpg more than my saturn ion, lol.

The name is bill

It was between the ION and Corolla when we bought it. Wife wanted the Corolla and I wanted the ION...

You can see who won!

PS: glad I went with the Corolla. It's been perfect. Never an issue and never been back to the sealership.

Your are getting amazing efficiency out of your corolla. I do much more city driving and even when on the highways around KC I often find myself in 2nd or 3rd gear putting along at city speeds. I am beginning to really hate the Paseo bridge. I blame my 37mpg average on the type of driving I am forced to do and is probably pretty good with all things considered. My neighbor has a Prius and averages 49mpg in similar driving, but he paid 13K more for his car.

What kind of mileage did you get when the car was younger? Did you see it improve as it broke in?

Thanks

It has always gotten excellent MPG but I will say that it *IS* getting better MPG as it gets older.

Maybe cause the engine is wearing out from all the conventional oil and has less friction?

But, remember that I'm at 4700 ft so less air = less fuel needed to get going. And, I drive for MPG. Shift normally around 3k and watch for stop lights and such.

The worst MPG since I've had the car has been 38.09 (construction on the freeway and everyday was bumper to bumper for atleast 15-20 miles).

Take care, Bill

I wonder if using oil with low noack volatility will reduce the consumption. But otherwise, apart from fuel dilution, UOA is reading perfectly well! You'll probably get 200k miles easy on that motor.

the TOYOTAs that we have or had usually get 1-3 more m.p.g. than what the window sticker states , the '03 MATRIX ( 1.8 ltr. w/ 4speed auto)averaged 33 m.p.g. during 4 years of owning , PRIZM averages 35 of stop and go driving of a motor route ( 4 hrs. , 250 + stops , and 100 + miles steep hills dirt roads , etc.)( eats at least 4-6 ounces of oil during route tho
frown.gif
), and the PRIUS averaging 52 m.p.g, since purchase in FEBRUARY . The '99 Ford ESCORT 5 speed was a gas sipper as well , that averaged about 34 m.p.g.. Actually liked the ride in that best . Ford Focus w/ O.D. ( rental ) was easy on gas as well , that hovered around 32 m.p.g. overall .

Great report as always Bill! I'm getting about 32 mpg in the HHR with a high of 35 and a low of like 28. Not quite the mpg I was getting with the Matrix but not horrible either. Also the larger tank helps stretch out the fillups by a day or 2

I will say that as easy as it was to change the oil on the 1.8, the 2.2 has it beat...no filter mess at all with the top loading cartridge.

I posted my first UOA a few posts down. I'm pretty happy with the results

Always enjoy reading your posts

This is a healthy engine. I have the 1ZZ-FE 1.8L in my 2002 Prizm. I just did a UOA running Valvoline 5w30 with 3200 oci. My copper read at 6ppm and iron at 6ppm at 75000 miles on the motor. I think I might have to take a look at Pennzoil conventional. I have seen a few UOA's where PZ yellow bottle has done better than synthetics...

Also my car has the now discontinued 3-spd auto so I only average 30mpg with 90% city driving. EPA estimates were 26city/32hwy when this car was new.
