in central kansas drive an 05 cavalier sedan 2.2 auto 80k mi. drive 104 mi per day mostly all 4 lane hwy. i drive like a hypermiler overall avg mpg is 33. the last few tanks have been 35 to 38 mpg. i currently run mobil 1 0w30 with ac delco filters at 5000 mi intervals. my question is is this my best option for engine protection or is mobil 1 a waste of money and mobil super 5w30 be suffecient.

Ecotecs run well on anything....wife's Cav can do 6k with nearly all city....
+2 your running a great oil! just get a better filter like a pure1, bosch, mobil 1, extended guard, or wix and stretch it out a bit. maybe 7k to start and if uoa shows good go 8

Upgrade your filter to an Extended Guard, Pure One, Bosch, etc. like electrolover said, and extend your OCI's
ecotec is one heck of a pita. feed it a good synthetic and you'll have a happier timing chain and adjuster/tensioner.

If you're a hypermiler then the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W30 (or maybe even the 0W20) is the way to go. Watch for AAP sales on the Purolator P1, the Fram XG, or Bosch DP filters & extend that OCI a little to save some $$$!
GM does not spec 20 grade in any of its engines.

Use the Oil Life Monitor (OLM) and continue using the Mobil 1 0W-30. Try using the Hengst USA filter which seems to be the best filter that you can buy. These are the AC Delco filters about $5 with tax at Advance Auto.
Run it out to 10k,your doing about 95% Hwy on Mobil 1.But if this makes you nervous then it sure is ok to save some money and go with the mobil Super 5000,probably out to 6k or 7k.Only a used oil analysis would clarify better.

Baby it? Heck no....you should see what our 03 goes through. 70+k and still going strong! No issues yet...very tough engine...

I agree, specially with mostly highway miles. If it was me I would go all the way to 12-13k miles or 6 months with Mobil 1 0W30, or you can use any brand name conventional 5W30 and do 3 months/6-7k miles .

I have to remember who you are so if I manage to snag pics of the last broken ecotec and send it to you, your opinion will probably change. This particular ecotec didn't make it to 150,000 before it completely let go.

The one thing I hated more than anything else about the particular car it was in, was that the engine light was ALWAYS on. Come to find out later, that it is extremely common for GM cars to have a P0442 code. I literally had everything replaced under warranty (everything that would cause that code), and it still couldn't be fixed. We came to the conclusion that it only meant: system normal!
