I just found out today that my 04 Ranger has been recalled. They put the wrong fluid in the auto transmission at the factory.

Ford only uses Mercon and Mercon V, so I'm guessing that they put Mercon in?

I called the dealer and they said all I need to do is come by and they will add 1 pint of an additive that will "FIX" everything.

I only have 8,000 miles and at 3,000, I installed a drain plug and replaced the filter. Dropping the pan only lets out about 2.5 qts of fluid. I put in Motorcraft Mercon V. Last week, I changed the oil, went ahead and pulled the plug on the transmission pan and drained another 2.5 qts of fluid. Again replaced with Motorcraft Mercon V.

The whole transmission only holds 10 qts. So basically I do have "some" Mercon V in there. Will their additive hurt anything? I'm guessing this additive just makes Mercon into Mercon V?

Thanks,
Brian

This is a very interesting question. I doubt that the additive in your brew will be real harmful but........what exactly is the additive? (Lubegard?) The answer is the science.....

I would be 100% straight with your dealer or better yet, FORD HQ(at least on the phone) and ask them.

The factory fill for your Ranger is Mercon V. If all you've added to your truck is Mercon V, no worries because that's the correct fluid.

Hmm...i havent heard about that recall. I know they have a lot of warranty trouble currently with the 4R/5R series of transmissions. Are you having any complaints?

No, my transmission is shifting great.

My letter doesn't call it a recall, but a customer satisfaction program. It says that the factory fluid degrades over time and causes it hard to shift into reverse.

Just to be safe, I did another drain and fill of the transmission pan (2.5 qts.). They are going to add some additive to the transmission to make the fluid more "robust".

The funniest thing is that this is over in March 2005. Act now or forget it!

Thanks,
Brian
