Got an '03 Dodge Ram wit a 4.7 in it and manual trans. I'm currently running RL 5W-30 and am satisfied. Oil has been synthetic since I dumped factory fill at 1500 miles, usually Havoline synthetic, sometimes MI and just recently RL, everthing has always been 5W-30. Now I have 40,000 on it. Living in northern New York snow belt, I was wondering if it would benefit me to use a 0W-20 oil or 5W-20 oil to aid cold startups and help the short trip fuel mileage. I will do occasional long highway trips and occasional light towing.
So what do you oil experts think? go with a 0W-20 synthetic or what?

i believe that the 4.7l v-8 is still not using 5w20 in 2005 models, so i would stick with your 5w30. maybe consider a 0w30 but i would not go down to a 5w20 or 0w20.

I would stick with the 30 oils. I have a 03 4.7 Dakota. live in the moutains of virginia. seen -20 and truck started up no prob with 5w-30. look in the manual it lists the oils and the temp range for them. its either 5w-30 for very cold winters but also for hot summers and yo ucan use the 10w-30 for mostly summer and not too cold winters. ran 10w-30 one time and the motor ran like crap. felt sluggish and gas mileage went south. put 5w-30 back in and cleared up.

I have GC 0w-30 waiting to go in around december. if you want to know more about GC goto the form below this one. but be warned they are a lil nuts

but 5w-30 will serve you fine in your motor. if you want to just stick with it. I ran it for 2 winters with no probs.. that was dino oil.

do you have the extended warranty on your ram. if so I wouldnt try the 20 oils you mentioned. as if they find out you used oil not recomended they can void your warranty and then you can be SOL.

I will keep you informed about the 0w-30 GC I am going to put in around december.if you like. so you can see how it might do in your 4.7 (that is if you want to go the GC route.)

Thanks guys.
I can not find GC around here, unless there is something special to look for on the castrol bottle that I do not readily see.

go here and it tells you what to look for. just a summary here. its only in auto zone (unless in canada then its walmart) and look at the lot number on bottom. in the post I made in the GC section they list the numbers that is green and gold. but if it says m04 at the begining then its green for sure and if it has a yellow lable then its not GC. I seen a few in auto zone like that. but the post should explain everything you need to know.
