The ones I've heard are quite momentarly after start, then the knocking begins, to last perhaps another 30 seconds.

Yeah, that's when the pistons began to expand and the noise goes away. The 4.8 we are discussing here starts to tick after the engine warms up, usually an exhaust manifold problem.
