So I bought this car with 66k, already dropped 600miles onto it with new tires and so on. Getting 28mpgs.
We drive it 30miles a day in Sunny California weather.
So far it has been 50f outside and mornings are in the 30's
Summer heat can jump to 100's/110's.

I know VW has some 502.00xxx something certified or recommended oil, but it has pasted the warranty, so I figure I should get a good synthetic?

I want to start off right, so can I get some oil tips for this car?
Thank you.

First tip, get a manual from the dealer, ebay, wherever.

What engine? 2.0L? 1.8L?

Id still use a 502 oil. Im actually running M1 ESP 5w-30 which is a 504/507 in place of 502 in our rabbit.

Look for a syn that lists 502, and don't worry too much. If it has a 1.8L, youll definitely want to run syn and change more often to combat sludge. Also orient yourself with the foam pcv pipe that tends to fail, etc. A good friend has over 170k miles on the 1,8T in his GTI, and no sludge running M1 0w-40.

Until you get the manual, go to vwvortex.com and you'll get get your questions answered on every subject. Search.
There are a lot of Vw guys here too and a lot of topics that have been adressed by knowledgeable people.
JHZR2's oil recommendations are a case in point. Search.

Jetta specific and not engine, (my '02 is a diesel, different oil) the car goes a lot of miles on a set of brakes and is rear biased. The coolant and p/s fluid is VW specific. There have been a few recalls, and there is a factory extended warranty on a falling window issue. Having said that, I love mine, and good luck to you with yours. 68k on an '02. Way to go!

On those Recalls, can I have those fixed for free? Or is this for the original owners?

No, some are free and it is vehicle related not necessarily first owner. Off hand, there is a relatively recent one on the heated seat switch. There is an important one on the brake switch, (it effects cruise control release), and there are engine ones that will differ depending on the type.
A good dealer will tell you what is out there and should be able to tell whether your car has had it done.

Save yourself some money, and run any 5W-40 synthetic. Yeah, it doesn't meet 502...whatever, but you're out of warranty, and a 5W-40 HDEO will protect well...

I'm running Rotella T 5w-40 in ours (with about the same number of miles as yours), but I will be switching it to GC 0w-30 at next interval, just so that I don't have to stock two different types of oil.

Your mpg is better than ours. We get about 25 mpg in mixed driving, which is somewhat pathetic considering that my 530i gets about the same mpg.

Keep an eye on the oil level... some of these 2.0 engines tend to consume more oil than others. Ours goes through about 1 quart every 3-4k miles.

Also, stick with OEM filters.

Here are the recalls on your car...

Call or take the car by a dealer and they'll be able to tell you if any of these are outstanding on your car. They'll need the VIN in order to do the check.

Cheers

I maintain a 2002 Jetta 2.0L for a friend. These engines are easy on oil. It says 5w40 502 spec synth oil, but that is really for the recommended drain intervals (which I think is 7.5K oil and 15K filter--don't quote me on that though, I'm going by memory). The VW dealer here does Quaker state 5w30 dino as their standard oil change...can you believe that? from a dealer. I started doing my friends car at 140K and all it ever had until then was quaker state 5w30. Runs great and looks clean. I have since been using PP 5w30 and it's been fine.

If you have the 1.8 Turbo, I would say nothing but M1 0W40 and 5K changes at most. That engine is a sludger.

I think the OCI is actually 10K miles oil/filter. I'm currently doing it on RTS 5w-40. Planning to do a UOA to see how that's working out. But in my case, over the course of 10K miles, I have to add about 2.5 qts of fresh oil - that's more than 50% of the sump capacity.

Raz, I would use M1 0w-40 or M1 5w-40 that is what my nephew uses and he has the same car that you have. (02 VW JETTA 1.8T)

you could also use PP or AMSOIL too.

Andy

VWs generally don't, but some 2.0s had oil rings installed upside down at the factory.
