I have a suzuki aerio 2002, automatic, has 101k miles on it, and I was wondering if there was any particular synthetic oil that would be best for it since it has a timing chain with hydraulic lifters? The vehicle is driving 70% city/ 30% highway driving.

Haven't changed the ATF yet, for the ATF I was thinking Redline, RP or amsoil. I just didn't know if it would be best for a certain oil to go in the car since it has non adjustable hydraulic lifters and a timing chain. Current OCI is 3k.

I have a co-worker that drives the same car and has used M1 5W-30EP and changes it every year at around 12,000 miles or so oci. Has worked for him. He has no leaks, little consumption, and all looks clean under the oil cap.

3000 mile oil changes are a waste, even with conventional.

You could easily go at least 5k using any SN dino. BTW even most "conventional" is actually syn blend with the stringent SN standards.

Since you get your filter at Napa, just stock up on their house brand synthetic when it goes on sale for $3.49/qt (usually 2-3x a year). It is rebranded Synpower. It should be capable of 7k.

As for ATF, you don't really need anything special. I'd suggest Mag 1 Low-Vis ATF, available on Amazon for only $4 per quart for a synthetic ATF. (but buy something else along with it since $25 orders get free shipping. go here

Of course, there is nothing wrong with Maxlife ATF which is very popular on BITOG. They recently changed the formula so it is now full synthetic.

Well I was looking for a oil that would be good for non adjustable hydraulic lifters and a timing chain. From what I've read moly is really good for stuff like that but, most of them have way to much zinc and would kill my cats.

ALL the SN-rated oils have very little zinc, so it shouldn't be a problem. Remember, your car was made with SL oil in mind, which had more zinc than you'll find in *any* SN oil.

High ZDDP levels are only a problem if your engine is burning oil.

Why waste the money for synthetic oil? Today's dino oil is excellent.

I've been a lurker of BITOG for a couple of years and have wondered when the memo came out that today's dino oil is only good for 5K miles. All my cars are fairly new and they say 7500 miles for OCI.

I have a 02 Aerio SX also with 153k on it and I use name brand dino oil. Pulled the valve cover off at 130K to replace a weeping gasket and was amazed to see a nice clean engine. I change oil per Suzuki recommended mileage.

4 posts in 8 years?! You are very restrained.

Synthetics don't protect better than conventional, you would be wasting money dumping it at 3k. IF you must use a synthetic, i am a big fan of M1 High Mileage.

If we can sway you into a conventional, you have a ton of choices, PYB, VWB, QSAD, ST, GTX, or if you want to fall somewhere in the middle, maybe Motorcarft syn blend or Pennzoil synthetic blend.
