As mentioned in a few other threads I've been driving my sisters 02 Focus lately. She passed away in June and it's been in limbo since actually for a long time since she hasn't been able to drive in 2 years. Dad and I have drove it over 20k in that time though. My parents are letting me drive it to fix a few things and so I'll have something decent to take on my work trips in Dec and Apr. I like driving this car it's comfortable and gets good mpg. Seem to have plenty of room for the family also. I've maintained this car for her since she bought it in 03 with 32k miles. The egr tube (known problem), coil and the a temp sensor and now runs perfect. The only thing I know is wrong with it is the AC, leaking from the rear of the compressor. The tires are almost new. Need to take the tires off this weekend and check everything front and back seems to wander although that could be the wind lately. Paint and body isn't perfect since a teenage girl drove it, not any worse than the Escape though! They've asked me if I wanted to buy it in the past. How much I don't know. The only problem I have is the SPI engine and valve seats. That could be fixed for $325 for the head probably $500 all together and never have another problem. But with the original it could run another 100k who knows. If it was a ZETEC no brainer. I'm going to ask them what they would sell it to me for in a couple weeks. They've already said they didn't want to sell it or trade it.. although I think deep down they really want me to buy it. As I'll take care of it as I always have and not tear it up. Thoughts?

Sorry to hear your sister passed away. It would be nice to keep it in the family, but it should be at a fair price. Otherwise you will resent the whole thing.

Great looking car for an 02 focus. 2 years ago when I was looking for a used car for my wife, looked at a bunch of old focuses(foci?). Even mid 2000's had rust galore and the engines sounded like a nasty lawnmover, despite miles in the 50K-90K range. This looks like a great car, keep it if the price is reasonable.

My biggest problem would have been the emotional toll. But it sounds like you've gotten over this and it's not an issue. Since you know the car's history very well, you know what you'd be getting yourself into. If the price is right, go for it.

+1

tough one. I would hope if I was int he same situation, they would not expect me to buy it (i.e. give it away for a dollar), unless there is finance owing that you could pay out. money and family don't mix well for me, others may have no problem...

sorry to hear about your sister, my thoughts are with you and your family! i'd buy it! it is rare you get to buy a used car you know the history on! like somebody else said i hope you get the family price! does this car have the duratech chain motor?

Thanks everyone. Emotionally probably never get over it in some ways. Just really starting to set in with her b-day last month and the holidays. No rust I'm surprised to hear they rust never see that here on the Focus. Not sure they may give it to me they did her laptop which I also took care of and helped her pick out. It has the SPI engine.. wish it was the zetec or duratec. I'm kinda split though. If they try to give it to me I might instead agree to a price and split it among my 2 boys (maybe a 3rd little one) and my 2 nephews. But right now really not a wise thing to buy another car.. still have the latest one's bills and I'm afraid their could be a 3rd. Knowing my sister she wouldn't care. Going down next week for Thanksgiving I'll bring it up then.

No one needs it really. My dad has 2 and mom has her newer Corolla. If you go buy average prices around here 3500 to 5k. Good grief I think she only paid $8k-ish back in 03 when she bought it. Hard to believe a 10 year car is going for that much. Guess it's been a while since I bought a newer car.

Just a update talked to dad today. He just would like for us pay the property taxes and insurance and we can drive it as long as we need to or at least as long as it'll last. Wouldn't get anything trading it in and they don't want to sell it.

Nope.. more so since it's only $80 for insurance, property taxes less than $100 a year and not sure what the tags cost but that's every 2 years. Much cheaper than even the Festiva! KS vehicle registration is terrible the only thing bad about MO is the inspection.
