Hey guys just picked up an z06 vette with 80k.. I was thinking about auto-rx'n the motor, trans & diff. My issue is the car has had synthetic motor oil in its whole life.. Ive read that you can use auto-rx with synthetic oil but the results aren't as great and the process takes twice as long.. Would it be a problem if i switched to a dino oil for my clean & rinse stages of auto-rx?

Edit: I would like to use a Group III oil (Pennzoil Platinum) if the results are the same as using a dino oil.

According to the Auto-RX website, you should try to use dino for the clean & rinse.

Since you're out of warranty and most oils are great these days (and you'll only have the oil in for 3000 miles) IMHO you'll probably be ok.

Don`t put any additives into that beautiful car. Grab your fave motor oil/filter,transmission fluid, and rear diff gear oil and change away :^)

+1

So some of you are just suggesting changing all of these fluids without cleaning them first with additives?

I was thinking the same thing...but was too shy to say it!

If that Vette was mine it would go buy all the Mobil 1 products I could and change out all the fluids.

Weren't these factory filled with M1?

Exactly. Unless there is a need for cleaning agents, you're better off without them. Modern syn oils ( some more than others ) have additives that clean deposits and provide great lubrication. PP is kinda known for being one of the better cleaning syns.

Congrats on the "new to you" Vette :)

Thanks!!! Well if M1 has been used all it's life should I just stick with that?

An area we can't see is the rings and piston lands.
This is important, and I think it is smart to try additional cleaning for this region . Maybe not always, but using additives or a special oil is smart here and there.
The new [and expensive] Pennzoil Ultra is touted as being one of the best cleaning oils.

that car im sure seen 3k oil changes, yea maybe do the trans and rear ends but a cleaning additive isn't necessary it cam from factory with synthetics in them sumps.

You may already know this, but Corvettes are supposed to use an oil that meets the GM standard GM4718M. That may be for warranty purposes only however.

IIRC, the M1 0W-30, 5w30 and 10w30 all meet this spec. And I believe that PP does as well.

Absolutely. Any good lubricant has all the cleaning agents it needs. Additives don't clean anything but your wallet.

I would much rather use PP over M1 - there shouldn't be any issues making the switch would there? The car has most likely had M1 in it all its life.. I prefer PP due to better cleaning agents IMO.

No problem at all, go ahead and use PP, it's a great oil.
