02 Camry Solara filter refuses to budge

This is a good idea. I like the sand paper idea.

I'd even be inclined to say a piece of sand paper, the correct filter cup, then hammer that baby on.

The heat shields are right there in front and easy to take off. Not a big deal. I have dome it about 5 times in the 15 or so times I have changed the filter.
 
I used to have a car with the 1MZ. I've always found it easier to remove a filter when cold rather than hot. Plus, you won't burn yourself on the exhaust thing on top of it if the engine is cold

Since the TLE filter has the textured grip, it should come off eventually

My best method of getting the filter off, besides a hammer and screwdriver, is to wear grippy ribber gloves called "mad grip"
 
A finger type wrench will get this off easily.
Cap wrenches are typically useless in my experience.
Some oil filter installations are just hard to get to.
 
Let things cool down before working on that end. I also favor the Lisle or the filter wrench BigD posted. If all else fails, a large pair of Channelocks will do it.
 
I finally got it off. Took 3 days of quitting and starting again, 3 different wrenches, 2 extension sizes, a 24" breaker bar, and sandpaper.

I got it off and the cap wrench was stuck to the filter permanently. Had to throw both away. Tightened the new filter by hand and then backed it off 1/4 inch. It's basically sitting there just kissing the engine block. Don't care though, next time it should be easier.

I have done that myself on AC Delco Factory-installed filters! But, once you drive the screwdriver in, there is no turning back.........

Put Permatex Copper or Nickel Antiseize compound on the filter gasket. No need to back-off a hand-tightened filter. Ev

I actually wrench mine a quarter-turn additional after hand tightening it. Still comes off easy using antiseize.

That's exactly how I do mine. Never had one leak yet. I think getting the gasket "going in the right direction again" makes a huge difference in getting it off later.

. Just used this wrench on a bear 🐻 well my neighbors stuck oil filter. Took it right off. PF-48E It did however deform the can a bit. P.S. Are these wrenches just for removal purposes ?

Yes they're just for removing them, they don't grip in reverse.

I have one and it's my go to for stuck filters.

Don't do this, use clean oil only on gasket for future installations.
 
I don't think the gasket cares whether the oil is clean, dirty, or even oil.
I've heard of people using grease of various kinds.
I use a drop of oil from the drain pan and no problems.

Use a Denso oil filter. They have a built -in torque stop allows the o-ring seal to to deform to engineered specs and then prevents turning. Used them for years and never,never had a leake. I could care less about the filter efficiency. If Toyota engineers think they are good enough for Toyota products, they are good enough for me. DENSO

Glad the sandpaper trick worked.

I've had filters stuck on the cap wrench too. I hold on to the filter at the business end and pound (away from you) on the cap wrench with a hammer. Pound a bit and turn a quarter turn or so, pound and turn, pound and turn. I've always managed to get them off.
