'00 Sportage Oil Requirements

I purchased a '00 Kia Sportage 4x4 as a secondary vehicle but it has no maintenance history or owners manual. It runs great and whoever owned it before took good care of it.

What oil to use and which weight? What interval? Looking for suggestions. I'm thinking 5w30 conventional every 3-5k. It has 90k miles.

The motor is the 2.0L DOHC Mazda 3FE. If it lasts another 50K I'll be happy with it. No sign of sludge in the engine when looking through the oil cap onto the camshafts.

My truck is stuck in the shop getting the transmission replaced ($3500), so I bought this for 3k. I think I got a good deal given how good it runs and the condition it is in. I'm glad it is a Mazda designed powertrain, that give me some reassurance.

The chart you listed seems to prefer a 10w-40 oil. We've been in the 90's most of June and can get into the 100's in the midst of summer.

The oil in there is 30 weight I'm sure. Should I switch it to 40?

On Kia and Hyundai vehicles, you can go from a 5w30 to a 20W-50 depending on region, climate, temperatures, and overall maintenance of your vehicle. Stick with 10w30 or 10W-40 in the summer and 5W-20 or 5w30 in the winter.

I have the same car and have been running 10/30wt year round Mobil 1 Extended Performance, since it was a year old. No problems. It's my wife's car and she drives 15 miles a day city driving. Her car only has 89k on it. One thing you'll notice, when you turn the AC on it really puts a drain on the motor.,,

Mobil suggest:

Above 0F - 10W30 Conventional

Below 0F - 5W20 Conventional (Actually a Syn Blend most likely).

I have never been very fond of the way 5w30 Conventional tends to shear down.

Actually if it was mine I would be tempted to use a 0W30 or 5W30 Synthetic year round and chose which one based on annual mileage. The goal being once a year oil changes.

I usually run 5w30 or 10w30 in my moms 99 Sportage. It has ocasionally had 10w40 and 15w40 in it.

OT: There is a O-Ring where the oil cooler bolts onto the oil filter adapter. You cannot buy the O-Ring anywhere. You must buy the complete oil cooler from Kia to get it and that costs $120.

I took an O-Ring from a purolater oil filter and stuck it in there. It's a little bit taller but Narrower than the original but it works.

If you get a p0101 MAF code and you figure out why let me know what it was. Common problem and nobody can fix it.
