stick with the recommended oil, the manufacturer know's what they're doing. as for brand you can choose your flavor as long as it has and meets all the current standards. I never was a pennzoil fan myself. I would run Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge.
*The only way to know if CAFE are influencing the lighter weight oils is to check the owners manual from other countries (like Australia , Singapore , Brazil , etc. ) to see if the same engine can accept a heavier grade oil ? In the case of the Hyundai Theta II 2.4L GDI engine the owners manual allows 5W20 , 5W30 and 10W30 oil grades ... Stepping up to a 30W will help this engine have enough oil film thickness (rod bearings) to prevent the engine eating itself .

The only reason 20-grade (and thinner) oils were developed was because of a push for fuel economy. There is no other compelling technical reason for them. There is no mechanical benefit to the engine.

Is the same true for 30 grade oils?

Who uses 20w-50 in their cars anymore?
People in Saudi Arabia. Go on Castrol’s Saudi website and do the oil recommendation selector. I swear it’s rarer than rare that you find an engine there that they won’t recommend 20w50, even engines that are spec’d for 0w20 in Americaland. I live in a similar climate and my engines aren’t exploding running 0w40.

I run Castrol Edge Titanium 5W20 in our Pentastar because it was the thickest 20 at the moment that met MS6395(?). The warranty is up now but I'm still running the same oil. May try Valvoline 5W30 since it's a very thin 30 grade, but the valvetrain is indeed the last thing to get oil, and it does take a second to quieten down so there's that in favor of the recommended 20 grade. Some say it's because of the cartridge filter with "no adv" but others say it doesn't need an adv because... bla bla bla.

The engine runs good and is quiet on the Castrol with 101k miles.

But how long are the engines lasting relative to the 20 grade engines? Does the far thicker oil contribute significantly to startup wear from slower flow, or poorer flow after warm? I don't know and most likely will never know the answer to this, mountains of anectotal evidence aside. 😁

There are now millions of miles accumulated on motors running 0/20w oil. It's a topic on BITOG that refuses to die. 0/20W oil-I guess is still in the "kicking and screaming phrase" on this board-as is the ultimate future of EVs on our roads.

Just another day on this special place.

Some engines are made to run the thinner oils really great at least my Honda odyssey 2006 running 5w20 does say so, though I wouldn't say vw's should run a 5w20 or 0w20 unless the ambient temperature is very very cold.

You run 20w-50 in your camry, why not in the oddesy?

Its been an experiment, the Camry does very well and is very smooth but with high parasitic loss for maximum protection,
the odyssey rpms are horrible with 5w20 but it can shift under 2k rpms.

Wait, the transmission alters its shift points in response to the grade of engine oil?

No, the engine makes enough torque to shift at lower rpms and maintain decent speed, so a 5w20 will suffice in the odyssey engine, due to running at much lower rpms than any of my other cars.
