Learning how to oil a Mercedes

I'm going to take delivery in a little while of a new MB Roadster, the SLC 300. It will have a 2.0L inline 4. What I don't know is which oil viscosity is actual or recommended for the vehicle. The owner's manual is surprisingly uninformative as to what oil to put in it, other than that it must...

Stopped Uphill Automatic Tranny No brake

I've always wondered about this: Come to a full stop on an uphill grade. Vehicle with auto tranny. Without using the brakes, the vehicle stays in place. On the level, it would creep forward. Uphill, stopped. Is this detrimental to the tranny at all, not using the brake?

22 Members using German Syntec have sent lot numbers

I've asked members who've found the German oil to send me lot and production information that is printed along the bottom of the bottles. I've been hoping to get a handle on distribution and production patterns from the numbers, but, to date, I can identify only six apparently-distinct lots. So...

What is the European definition of "full synthetic"?

As we know, in Europe Group III oils cannot legally be labelled as "full synthetic", unlike the amibiguous conventions in North America. Does anyone know the maximum allowable percentages of carrier oils or other consitituents that may be present in a full synthetic oil as the concept is...

GTX +German Syntec. What say you?

Nissan Z24 engine, 4 quart capacity, in an 89 pickup. Manual specs 10w-30 or 10w-40. It has had regular 3K miles changes since new, never had an engine problem, never been opened. Castrol GTX 10w-40 is the only oil it's ever known. Nissan filters only. It now has 96K miles on it and is driven...

    Another Castrol 0w-30

Compare these results to G-Man's His oil was lot M023386B TAG785. This oil was lot M030426B T/W0504821 Except for the iron, these numbers compare very, very closely.

    Royal Purple 5w-30 F-150

Column 1 are values with this oil at 2700 miles through 6200 miles. Second column is interval 6200-9700. Vehicle had just come off a hot roadtrip of about 1200 miles, a lot of that in temps of upper 90°s/low 100°s and through mountains. Other miles are 50/50 highway/city. Tough luck for an...

Really got grilled at the post office today--sample kits.

I presented two samples for mailing. Clerk asked me if it was anything "liquid", "hazardous", or "flammable". Never been asked that before. I answered that it was liquid, but not hazardous or flammable. She inquired. I said "motor oil for analysis at this lab [pointing to mailing label]". She...

Members: Please identify labs you have used for oil analyses

We have Blackstone, supporter here. Others? Please ID labs you've used. How was the service? Costs? Anything that caused you to doubt or question the results? Timely? Other considerations?

How much grease should be applied to a zerk fitting?

When is enough enough? How do you know? What to look for? Examples of locations and types of fittings at those locations would be very helpful. Thank you.

Latest distribution table for the German Castrol

As long as there is still a buzz about this oil, and speculation about its continued or extended availability, I'll keep this table updated. I've included two more data fields in this one. I don't know what they mean yet. Still looking for trends. Please continue to post new numbers.

    Blackstone responds

Blackstone Labs answered an inquiry regarding sample size and analysis. 1. For a VOA, they need three ounces or 90 mL. 2. In a thread about how oils without moly perform using other additives, there was speculation that the German Castrol may contain Antimony. Well, if you want to test for...

Have you ever been denied warranty service because of the viscosity of your oil?

The prospect of being denied engine service under warranty because of using a non-API oil or an oil with viscosity other than what is recommended is a constant theme here. I believe that it drives some decisions about oil choice that may not be optimal, based on driver habit, environment...

Air Comp. mechanics: help me build one around this pump

I came upon a compressor pump in a shop that was being dismantled. I understand them intellectually, but I don't have hands-on experience at servicing, much less building one. But I'd like to give it a go. The device that I have holds a very strong vacuum when I cup my hand over the intake. The...

When will the filter testing resume?

Bob, Joe, et al. Do you have a timeline for testing cans again? The original post has morphed into a bypass discussion about which I'm not interested, but I keep looking everytime there is a new post to see if we're getting back to testing. Can you give us a status report or update, please...

Tribologists: Oil with no moly. Do additives+base perform a similar function?

G-Man did two VOAs on the German 0w-30 Castrol, the one that we suspect is composed of a high percentage of esters. The additive elements in the two analyses were: How does this oil protect? What components/component combinations perform analogously to the moly found in other oils, if possible...
