How to keep people from using driveway.

Apparently, the mid-street, 3-point turn is no longer a skill in the typical driver's repertoire. Driveway turners have become a problem for us in recent years. I think it is a combination of location on the street and a few neighbors just up the street that often have large parties. When I get...

    Who has use or loose?

6 weeks for me (15yrs service), and we lose any that hasn't been taken by 12/31. I typically leave 2-3 weeks on the table, because I'm an idiot. Upper management went to an "unlimited" policy, but the net result of that has been them taking less time off. No one wants to be the outlier.

Are you a collector of anything?

The way some people are afraid of clowns, you'd think I was collecting souls!

$2.58/$2.86/$2.99 here at my local Sunoco.

Funny how things fall into your lap

Adirondack peaks are like this now, too, until the cold weather takes hold. We're rapidly approaching the time of year when some fools will go up in sneakers/t-shirts, get caught in a blizzard and need rescue. Hiking/wheeling/exploring is so popular now, but there are also a heck of a lot more...

SMOG Test - OBDII Monitors Not Ready

Odd situation. What would you do?

I'm in the "wife is never driving sketchy garbage" camp. I'd either replace now, or look for a set of winter tires/wheels on Craigslist to get her through the winter. I do have CS3s on the ratty, old minivan that I use for dump runs and winter beater duty. We get a lot of snow, often over a...

Fixing cracks in concrete pool deck

I tried a quick-set mix last year on a 1/2-1" crack, with closed-cell foam wedged deep into the crack. The "repair" cracked while drying but was good enough to keep most water out over the winter, so the crack didn't really get worse. We lived with it this summer, and I may just cover the crack...

How do you and your S.O handle multiple cars?

We have "His" and "Hers", that are really Ours. I typically inherit her vehicle once it is old enough to be potentially unreliable and we get her a new one. This was my Dad's philosophy and I see no reason to change that. No one is likely to harass me while broken down on a country road. I drive...

1970 Chevelle SS 396 vs Buick GS Stage 1 455

I'm partial to the GS, just because it was a bit different. I had a 442 and most of my friends had various Chevelles, except for one, who found a GS. By the time we got them, there were more rust holes than intact sheet metal, but we had a blast racing and wrenching. I'm sure none survived, but...

    College costs shocked me...

Yep, son graduated from BU this year, where sticker price is $75K per year. There are loads of foreign students paying that, and virtually no one else. His degree is in Biomedical Engineering, and he secured a full-ride slot in a PhD program at one of the top 4 US universities for that field. By...

    Border Patrol

No idea on the oil used, though air filters might be more important on the southern end. My old boss had a brother who worked BP in the north. They had a specific allotment of fuel for ATVs and snowmobiles each month. Once that was gone, no more patrolling. He spent a LOT of time detailing his...

How are people crimping shielded RJ45 connectors

I gave up. Buy premade cables for interconnect now, as virtually any spec/length/color can be had at reasonable prices. Premise wiring is terminated in patch panels on one end and wall jacks on the other.

    Another detector find

Cartridge is a 1942 production from Twin Cities Ordnance near Minneapolis. Fascinating history to the place, and a great example of the dedication of American manufacturing to the war effort.

    Check your dog food

We feed our dogs Orijen. It is my opinion that the quality decreased when production was moved from Canada to Tennessee. Like this article and the FDA "warning", I have no evidence to back up my thinking. I'd bet good money that many owners using higher-quality foods are overfeeding, and not...

Son's van is giving multiple warning lights that come and go - vehicle dies

Had a similar problem with an 04 with the 3.8L. Positive battery cable looked fine at the connector, but was terribly corroded at the crimp. So much so that about half of the strands had snapped. Same sort of thing - random lights and then stopping dead while driving. Every couple of years I'd...

    Get in the Pollution Zone

It's law here in NY - if you sell oil you must take used oil back for recycling. Presumably there are exceptions for Mom & Pop places that only have a couple of dusty quart bottles on the shelf. Not sure about filters. I just take both to the local transfer station, where they also accept AF...
