Recommend battery tester for group 48 batteries

I tested the wife's battery which tested good. Two weeks later she was stranded with a dead battery. I'm replacing batteries every 3 years in the wife and daughter's cars now just to be safe. I don't mind being stranded but I don't like them stranded. I'm always doing something so much more...

How do you like your Mazda? I'm considering getting a 2023 CX-5. I see a lot of them!

Recommend SUV for mother in law for $8k

Good choices! My '08 has 346,000+ miles on it and the only thing I'm truly diligent about is oil changes and keeping up with fluid levels. It still drives like a new car; tracks straight and true, no rattles, no leaks. It's starting to look its age a little but all in all, good, solid car!

    Homeowners Insurance Opinions

I had Liberty Mutual for home and auto for 17 years. When my renewal came in Dec 2024 for year 2025, the rates jumped up high enough that I decided to look around. I went with NJM (New Jersey Manufacturers) which only covers 5 states but has a great reputation. I saved $5000.00 per year plus I...

    Kyle Busch passed away

Probably a driver I was most familiar with because of the frequent social media postings about his son's up and coming racing career. Kind of felt like I almost knew the family which makes this that much sadder. To go from winning a truck race and then passing away days later at such a young...

Do people park backwards in parking spaces where you live?

My wife always complains how hard it is to back out of our driveway because our across-the-street neighbors park in the street. I encouraged my wife to back into our driveway so in the morning she can just pull out easy-peasy. That idea was rejected because that would leave the driver's side...

Car Care Nut: Aftermarket oil filter housing concern.

I thought about that but with all the components in the way, I didn't think I would get sufficient bite with a strap to get the cap seated. It takes quite a bit of torque to get that cap to bottom out and with it having a film of oil on it I opted not to try that approach.

Car Care Nut: Aftermarket oil filter housing concern.

Did an oil change on my wife's Highlander yesterday. While installing the new o-ring on the cap, it slipped out of my hands, off the bench, bounced a couple of times on the concrete before coming to a rest. Of course, the center tube was dislodged and now at an angle that it shouldn't be. No big...

Let's talk about living in the Northeast and underbody rust

My '08 Honda gets driven everyday all year long and is not garage kept. I wash it somewhat regularly in the winter but I'm not going to win any "Clean Car" awards. It looks remarkably good underneath. On the other hand, my sister has a 2015 Audi A4 Quatro and her whole subframe needed to be...

    Oil for 2006 Honda CR-V?

My '08 CR-V with 344,000 miles has been run on 5W-20 and 0W-20 its entire life. Currently running Valvoline Restore and Protect. I'm not gonna lie, it burns about a quart to quart and a half during a 5,000 mile OCI but other than that, it still runs strong. I've used mostly Pennzoil over the...

    The Honda Oil Filter Thread

I don't think I've ever used a Honda filter. It's been a variety of Fram, Wix, STP, Mobil 1, CarQuest. Based on the almost 345,000 miles on the vehicle, I think they've performed OK.

    When to replace radiator hoses?

Years ago on a 2002 Honda Cr-V that was going to the dealer for a recall repair, I asked that they also change the two radiator hoses. There was nothing visibly wrong, I just figured it was time. The dealer told me they didn't recommend changing those hoses. My biggest shock was that a dealer...

Have you ever reconnected with an old friend after 35 years

After about 30 years, I reconnected with a guy friend who had moved out of state and we both let time and distance make it easy to lose touch. Out of the blue he called a couple of months back as he was going to be in my area for a family matter. We met for dinner, talked, reminisced and had a...

    Post your new battery purchase.

Same here! The D/H Gold battery in my wife's 2019 Highlander just died slightly past the 3 yr. warranty date. Bought a new battery from Advance Auto and this time after all the scrolling and questions, they gave me a D/H Platinum with a 4 yr. warranty. This is also the third battery and now the...

What are you working on today?

Replaced the Knock sensor on my '08 Honda CR-V. Had to partially remove the front shroud under the radiator and purchase a big 'ol 27mm combination wrench to get the job done. The old sensor came out pretty easy. It was tough to get myself positioned so that I could hold the replacement at the...
