Amsoil 5W-30 or Mobil truck and suv 5w-40

I'm not trying to start competition between brands with this thread. Was just curious about what some of the members thought about my plan. I plan on changing oil in my toyota Highlander this weekend. Car has always had dino 5w-30 and fairly extended drains (about 7,500 miles). I plan to switch...

    UOA kits

If I want to have a UOA done (never done one before) can I find the necessary containers at a local auto store? I don't have the time to order from a lab since I want to change the oil this weekend.

    rate these brands of gas

Where I live I have the following major brands of gas available: Mobil, Sunoco, Citgo, Hess and Getty. Generally speaking, is any one known to be better than the others? Which has the better additive package? Currently, I switch btwn Mobil and Sunoco every 5K miles or so. Mobil seems to be more...

    Mobil 1 0W-40 or BMW 0W-30

Although I really want to use GC 0W-30 for my next oil change this Wed. for the BMW, I can't find it, even at the local Autozone. They have a Castrol Syntec 0W-30 but the back says made in USA using imported components. So from what I've read this is not the GC. I've been reviewing the UOA...

    another dumb ignorant question

BMW manual has oil viscosity chart that shows 5W30 oil being used up to 60 degrees. Above that temp. it looks like a 40 wt oil is needed. Why are so many people running 30 wt. oils that live in areas that get above 60 degrees. Does it have anything to do with the use of synthetic oil? Would I...

High iron (not lead ) in mobil 1?

I admit when it comes to oil I don't know to much. But i've been searching the site alot, no really, ALOT and from what i can tell use of mobil 1 seems to yield higher iron results in the used oil. What is the source of the iron. What are acceptable lead #s? If the iron is higher in Mobil 1...

synthetic oil in lawn mower engine

Purchased a new snapper mower last year with Robin 6 hp engine. Engine has cast iron cylinder sleeve. When i asked if I could use synthetic oil in the engine, the manufacturer said it recommended against it and stated that the sythetic oil could cause oil failure within a couple of hundred...

    German Castrol 0W-30

Two questions: 1. Is this a full synthetic (PAO) group IV oil? 2. After searching the UOA forum and this one, it appears that at least one person reports to have had a negative experience with this oil. Has there been any other problems with this oil?

    What octane do I need?

My manual says to use a gas with a minimum octane rating of 89 using the AKI method. On a car forum one member said that in the US the octane rating is done by the "RON" method and that an 89 octane rating (AKI) is equal to a 91 octane rating (RON). He said I need to use 91 octane in the US...

chevron, Havoline or mobil dino oil

Any major difference between these 3 oils assuming 4-5K mile OCI? Engine it will be used in has tendency to sludge although recent removal of valve cover showed very clean engine. Probably will get rid of car in next year, but want to put a good dino in until then.

    0W oil vs 5W

The manuals for both of my cars recommend 5W-30. I live in the NE and it can be very cold for 2 months out of the year. So I am considering switching from 5W-30 dino to GC 0W-30 synthetic to run year round in the one car. The other car uses BMW 5W-30 long life. From what I understand the BMW oil...

    Amsoil Best oil?

Anyone see this website? http://www.amsoil.com/performancetests/g1971/index.html I don't know much about oil, so its hard to know if this is accurate information. Any thoughts? Would this oil be better for BMW compared to the BMW long life synthetic oil? Trying to decide if it makes sense...

It has low miles, So...tonight I check the oil fill and there was a ton on gritty oil, looked like the material you see on common ashpalt shingles. oil recommendations?

I've got a 2001 toyota V-6. Have run 5-30 dino for 1st 30K miles. Not sure of the specific brands used. Thinking of switching to sythetic oil. Can anyone tell me what the true benefits to full syntheic oil are? Are there any brands better than others? I was thinking of going w/ Mobil 1, mostly...

    Redline SI-2

Anyone heard of this product? Redline recommended it to me in a response to an e-mail I sent about info on their SI-1 fuel cleaner. They claim that BMW specifically studied it in connection with intake valvue deposits. At the risk of making the message too long here is the e-mail and Redline's...

do i need fuel additive with good mpg?

Still debating whether to start using a fuel additive on the used bmw just purchased. I've noticed the my mpg has been very good. In fact mpg on highway trip yesterday was 28.6 (using 93 octane). BMW says I should be getting 26 on highway. My question: If I am consistently meeting or exceeding...

    what would you recommend?

Just bought used 1998 bmw with 46K miles. previous owner was woman in her mid 60's. I don't think it was run very hard. Should I be concerned about carbon build up on pistons and intake valves? I have been told that with fuel injectors, carbon build up is not really an issue as it was with...
