Methy Mike and the Sketchy Bunch

I run a group in my neighbourhood, in a city which has fallen dramatically into disrepair, and we will often have a police officer, world-renowned in his expertise in CPTED - Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design - conduct neighbourhood walk-throughs; and he will always quip "privacy...

Trying to disguise product made in China

We've had a phenomenon here in Canada over the last several months we call "maplewashing" where a product in a store is labeled - conspicuously, as you'd understand if you follow Canadian news - "PRODUCT OF CANADA"; and examining the packaging reveals it is comically obvious that it is not...

    Lock car at night

The quality of my city has dropped dramatically over the last 10 years; to the point that my wife and I crossed the border to Detroit for the first time post-COVID in 2023 and were astonished to find it in much better shape than on our side of the border. I never thought I'd see or say that in...

    Alternative to teamviewer

I have my whole network of servers and folks for whom I administer Ubuntu systems on a Tailscale network; and using RDP over that is easy as pie. The setup might be a bit much for non-technical users; hence my suggestion earlier for using AnyDesk.

    Alternative to teamviewer

I have had great luck using Windows' built-in QuickAssist feature, too; but everyone has to be using Windows.

    Alternative to teamviewer

If you need it to be super easy to set up and need it to work across multiple OS, AnyDesk will probably be your best option.

    Ubuntu Native Software Raid 1

"Free" can mean "freedom" and you are free to modify and redistribute the code. "Free" can also mean "no-cost". Unless you pay Canonical, the for-profit company that develops and manages Ubuntu, for a support contract, Ubuntu is both. Most Linux distributions have no such corporate backing and...

How to install stuff in ubuntu gnome GUI

If you installed the Server variant and THEN installed a Desktop you almost certainly missed something. Install the Desktop fully with this command in the Terminal: sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop That is a "meta package" that'll pull in all elements of the proper Desktop.

How to install stuff in ubuntu gnome GUI

Double click the .deb file, Ubuntu's built-in App Center will install it for you. You can use that App Center to browse tens of thousands of pieces of software.

    $2.50 for pump air?

Maybe it was organic air?

Can I trust ordering from walmart?

I have not read the other replies; please pardon redundancies: Your screenshot indicates that this product is being sold and shipping by "Valvoline Global" so the pricing is a matter of their choosing, not WalMart's; who just seems to be the brokering party, and who'd likely handle any disputes...

    Linux Experts Please Help

In the future your sequence of events might be a bit easier if you right-clicked in a blank area of the directory's listing; in this example right under all of those blue folder icons. I'd bet Cinnamon has an "Open Terminal Here" option. If you choose that a Terminal will open already set in...

    Linux Experts Please Help

That's definitely Mint. If not, it's something else running the Cinnamon DE. @demarpaint I would wager that since you are effectively searching through the menu that the location(s) that house these files are among the locations being searched. I am confident you'll be able to select what is...

    Societal addiction to phones

Being in touch with people and sharing details of your life is only the secondary purpose of the (software you'll find on your) phone. Human contact cannot compete with its true nature: Imagine a large group of us standing around in the real world. It's paradise. We've built quite a place...

    Chromebook Security

That's exactly what I mean: Sites where notifying me of a new instant message, email, etc. is appropriate and expected behaviour.

Yes it's just a stylized icon to let you know which app is sending the notification.

    Chromebook Security

The use case - and the only small handful of times I've allowed this - would be, for example, messaging sites. Other than that I have used a lot of language I'll not repeat here when helping folks who've inattentively allowed these from sites that begin ***flooding*** their notifications with...

    Chromebook Security

As others have noted, those messages are nothing more than "alerts" from a web site. In this case, they are very scammy-looking. You'll be able to disable alerts from that web site easily enough in settings at either the browser or device level.

Computer nostalgia - Post your relics!

The W-series was/is(?) built like tanks and had components that worked well w/ Linux. I would make a habit of buying used off-lease machines, replacing the HDD and using those for friends, family and neighbours that I'd support Linux installations for.
