    VRP is in Canada!

I just spotted VRP in a Canadian Walmart for the very first time! All three grades are $49.97 ($36.44 US) and these are in the slightly bigger 5L jugs as well.

Do any manufacturers still use break in oil?

We used to talk a lot about how Honda might have been using a break in oil which they recommended leaving in for the full interval on their new cars. But I’m not even sure they are still doing this. Are there any car manufacturers at all that use a special break in oil anymore?

When did Fram go off the rails?

I posted a picture of the Fram Endurance that I have in another topic here but I thought it might be better having it on its own. Approximately when did the ruffled leaf spring start showing up in their filters? Could the Endurance that I have been made prior to that? I’m going to run it in the...

Tire shop over torqued my wheels

When I got my new back tires installed today they said to come back after 50 miles to re torque the wheels and when they did that I’m pretty sure I heard the guy say that he was setting them to 140 ft lbs. I did notice that every lug that he re did moved quite a bit tighter than they originally...

Ceramic spray at the coin wash

I use one of those $3 do it yourself spray washes for my Corvette and I just noticed that my favorite one has a ceramic wax spray as a no cost option now. I obviously know that it’s not going to be anywhere near as good (or as durable) as a true ceramic coating but I’m going to start using it...

    Mobil 1 ESP X2 0w20

We don’t talk about this version of ESP very often but it’s now strongly on my radar for the next oil that I use for my Civic when I’m done with my intervals with VRP. It’s readily available here at Canadian Tire in 5 quart jugs and goes on sale often for around $45 (about $32 US) I think it...

Why so few extended life 0w30s?

I’m curious as to why the major manufacturers really don’t seem to offer an extended life (20k plus) in 0w30? Yes, if you look to HPL and Amsoil they both have 0w30s available that are in this category, but if you look at Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Valvoline, Castrol, Quaker State, none of them offer...

    Density of motor oil

The one thing that always seems to come up when looking at the technical data of an oil is density. What does this even mean and why would we care about it? It’s always felt like a meaningless piece of information to give us.

My Civic doesn’t convert to miles accurately

I know it’s being really picky but my 2016 Civic doesn’t convert into miles as accurately as I feel it should. Yesterday when I did my oil change the odometer was reading 261,711 km and when I switched the display over to miles it converted to 162,553 miles. But if you do a proper calculation...

Mileage effects on cold weather performance

One thing I have been curious about for a while now is how much of a difference is there in the cold weather performance of an oil once you put a few thousand miles on it. I’m speculating that the base oil plays a big factor here too. But generally speaking, would a 0w oil still be a 0w oil...

    Hot tire pressure

I’m wondering how many people here are like me and pay attention to what the hot tire pressure is, as well as the cold. Manufacturers always tell us to set the pressure when cold but they never really give a recommendation for the hot pressure. But yet that is an important factor as well. In...

Walmart Canada Black Friday Valvoline deal

One of the best deals I’ve seen on synthetic oil here in a while. It’s too bad we don’t have R&P in stores yet.

    My son’s 2002 WRX

Six years ago at the age of 16 my son bought his first car, a 2002 WRX, for $6000 Canadian. It needed a lot of work! In fact he almost wanted to immediately sell it when he found out that the subframe was so badly rusted that it would not pass the safety inspection 😥 He spent $4000 getting that...

Ideal cruising rpm for DI cars?

This is something I've never seen discussed anywhere but I've been curious about ever since I got my Corvette 6 1/2 years ago. Is it detrimental for engines with DI to be cruising along for long periods of time at lower rpms? Would that create more or less intake valve deposits in other words...

    Supertech 10k oil vs 20k

What do we know about the technical difference between the Supertech synthetic rated for 10,000 miles and the one rated for 20,000 miles? What has Warren done to make the 20k version last longer? Better base oil? Different add pack? The cost difference between the two isn't even that big.

Mike Portnoy to return to Dream Theater!

I am beyond excited at just hearing the news that Mike Portnoy will be coming back to Dream Theater! Mangini is technically good but he is kinda like a robot behind the drums. Portnoy is the closest thing to Neil Peart and I can't wait to hear the music they come up with now! I've seen DT live...

    Quaker State Euro L 5w30 isn't 30 weight

I was looking up the technical specs on Quaker State's Euro L 5w30 and noticed that it's viscosity is 13 cst at 100c, making this oil a 5w40. How can they label this a 30 weight oil when it's clearly out of the range of a 30 weight oil? (it needs to be between 9.3 and 12.4 cst at 100c)

    Who makes Canadian Supertech?

Does Safety Kleen still make the Canadian version of Supertech oils? (they did back in 2009, we know this) I ask this because starting tomorrow Walmart in Canada is selling Supertech synthetic for only $17.47 for 5L jugs, and that has to be the lowest priced synthetic available to us up here (it...
