Reasons NOT to go with an Over-sized filter?

Pat Goss on Motorweek TV show torn filter

Looks like the new episode will be available this next week online. The thread title should be, Pat Goss links torn media to engine failure. Let the doubters speculate on the why it does not matter. Purolator should pay attention now. If they are serious about addressing their issue they would...

Pat Goss on Motorweek TV show torn filter

The link shows what looks like a Purolator with a tear between pleats and when you zoom in looks like a perforated metal center tube. http://www.motorweek.org/features/goss_garage/oil_filters/

My last 3 have 51 pleats. I wonder if it is easy to pull the metal end-caps off, any advice how to attempt this?

Do You Pre Fill Your Oil Filter?

Whenever possible. Whatever helps prime the oil system, same reason most filters have an anti-drain value. The pre-soaking cellulose based media and media equalization is also a benefit to minimize the initial force against media. Maybe partly responsible for my pre-filled P1's (Honda) holding...

More ugly Purolator filters PL20195 PL10241

PL10241 prior filter with ~9000 miles, many wide spaced pleats. PL20195 last one off Sienna and ~8500 miles. Both have pleats that were loose at the end caps where the media appears to have been pulled lose or shrank away from adhesive. 10241 being much worst. filter pictures PL10241, PL20195...

[Cut Open] driveworks DW-4651 China made

Impressive uniform media spacing. The pleats all appear to have consistent clean side media spacing in the folds, almost like a wire backed media. The rounded folds mean maximum media surface area available for flow. Most non-wire backed filters seem to have many pinched pleats.

    Purolator L14610 Cut open

I see no reason to run the cheapest filters. The pleats look poor to me. The PL14610's for my Civic run 40% longer look much better. OP, Maybe you could cut pleats to show spread at the glue.
