    Singin' The Blues

    - HOW TO SING THE BLUES... A PRIMER 1. Most Blues begin, "Woke up this morning..." 2. "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the Blues, unless you stick something nasty in the next line like, "I got a good woman, with the meanest face in town." 3. The Blues is simple. After you get the...

    Politically Correct...

Due to the climate of political correctness now pervading America, Kentuckians, Tennesseans and West Virginians will no longer be referred to as "HILLBILLIES. You must now refer to them as APPALACHIAN-AMERICANS. And furthermore... HOW TO SPEAK ABOUT WOMEN AND BE POLITICALLY CORRECT: 1. She is...

    Oil Bath Filter

Generally speaking, are oil bath filters which were used on autos in past years more or less effective than modern pleated fiber filters?

    Transmission Fluid Flush

I have a 2001 Volvo V70 XC with 120,000 mi. I read most places that one should replace the fluid in your auto trans at certain intervals. However, my service maintenance schedule does not indicate this. When I asked the service manager at the Volvo dealership about it, he said that they do...

    Home Security

(Maybe this one will flow better than my last post.) There have been a couple reports recently about home break-ins. Perhaps this would help: Go to a second-hand store, buy a pair of mens used work boots--a really big pair. Put them outside your front door on top of a copy of Guns and Ammo...

    Profound Theory

The following is supposedly an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well. Bonus...

    Hour Meter/Tachometer

I recently purchased a portable sawmill powered by a 20 HP Honda 2 cyl gasoline engine. I placed an order for an hour meter/tachometer to keep track of running time for maintenance purposes. When I received the meter which just has an induction pick-up wrapped around the spark plug cable, is...

    Speed Limit

You see speed limit signs posted from time to time with the added note: "Strictly Enforced". Why don't we see speed limit signs stating "Casually Enforced"?

Black oil in 95 Crown Vic 4.6

I assume the filter is replaced with each oil change. However, for visible particulate matter to show up on the wiping rag, it seems that the filter has quickly reached it's capacity or is for some reason not doing it's job.

    Transmission Lubricant ??

I never know what to call my vehicle - import or domestic. It is a '92 Mazda B-4000, 5-speed manual, made in Canada, mostly Ford. Oh, well... Just 3 days ago I started noticing a slight high pitched transmission whine while under power. Also, while up-shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, I...

    TRACTOR OIL CHANGE

My cousin said he bought the tractor when he retired in 1979. It has just over 3000 hours on the clock. It still runs great. I indicated that I would like to purchase it when he decides that he doesn't need it any longer.

    TRACTOR OIL CHANGE

Last week I borrowed an elderly cousin's small 4 cyl. Ford diesel tractor for a few days. Before returning it to him I asked how did he know when to change the oil since it didn't have an odometer. He replied that you could use the hour meter, but he generally just waited till the oil felt...

    Valve Lifter Noise

A friend has recently acquired an '83 Pontiac (full-size with V-8). It doesn't seem to have been over-maintained. There is an engine noise which I am pretty sure is a clicking valve lifter. If the lifter is not pumping up properly, or otherwise stuck, is this a good candidate for ARX?

Mobil DC (GF4) and Piston Slap

What is piston slap? I have heard this term for years, but have never really known what it referred to and what caused it.
