    BMW Z3 2.5 with Castrol Edge 0W-30

Let me ask the guru's of BITOG your opinion. I just bought my wife a 2002 BMW Z3 with the 2.5 engine, low miles (32000). The previous owner did not know what type of oil he used, he just had the dealership change the oil. The owners manual calls for a 5W-30 or 5W-40 oil depending on the...

Dumbest Thing You've Done While Doing An Oil Change.

I was changing the oil for the older lady that lives next door. I went in under the front side but found it more convienent to slide back out under the driver side. As I slid my head out, the lady was standing next to the car with her back turned and I got a bid ole eye full of butt up under her...

    Are Pre-Lubers Really Necessary?

I think it depends on the application. If it is an engine that is run daily or so, it probably isn't feasable. Enough oil stays on the components over night to reduce wear. If it is something like a collector car, an RV, or a emergency generator, that is only fired up every few months, I would...

Anything into oil (from Discover Magazine)

I can see your point, and I guess it's how you calculate it. It is posted on their website under the FAQ section however, that it takes 15 BTU's of energy to process 100 BTU's of feedstock. The remaining BTU's are sold. However you calculate it, it's still very cool! Here's a link...

What's the consensus on Warren SuperTech

I've had very good results with the Supertech 5W-30. Here's the UOA. http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=001172#000000

Well here is what I've learned. 1. I've learned to listen with my heart. 2. I can now understand Sanscrit. 3. I have learned to divide by zero. (Yes, I stole this from Dilbert)

    Ban on Synthetic

Wouldn't the water sink to the bottom of the container? How did you get the water to float on oil?

    SuperTech 10W-30, 2546 mi, 89 Mazda B2600i

Another very decent UOA from a "cheap" oil. It may be heresy to say on this site, but I believe that for most passenger vehicles, any SL rated oil will work and your engine will likely never know the difference.

    SuperTech 10W-40, 4247 mi, 92 Toyota Pick-up

I had a UOA on an engine with Supertech (5W-30) and it had slightly elevated lead amounts as well. Just like yours, it was used for mainly for short trips. Some of the folks here told me they thought that going to a higher viscosity oil would bring the lead levels down, but I dissagreed and...

Test Idea To Determine If Filters Bypass During Normal Operation

One way to possibly see how much a filter bypass opens would be to set up a pump and filter mount on a jig, and pump oil that has been "seeded" with some visible contaminant. Pump the contaminated oil into a large glass container and look for visible particles. Anything visible would be more...
