OK guys, what's the best motorcycle synthetic?

Sunruh, sorry to ask but have you tested Motorex 10W-60 and Elf 10W-50? I'm asking because I'm considering either for my Guzzi as I noticed that the oil temp got to 130º C quite often in the summer. The former has been recommended by one of the best dealerships, and the new Guzzi engines...

    Green grease

I just discovered this thread. A while ago I started a similar one as I got Green Grease to lube the 3 zerks on the drive shaft on one of my bikes. I was wondering if anybody tested this grease. Later I contacted these guys: http://www.sandsmachine.com/grease_t.htm (I found the link on a...

    Mobil Super 4T misleading viscosity??

Hey rakuentw, I agree this is strange, but I don't know how to interpret it. One thing that I notice on the bottle images in your message, is that there is no word about "synthetic". The bottles sold in the US all have "synthetic" on them. You may want to send a message to Mobil 1 US Customer...

ACEA 3 vs. JASO MA vs. SG,SH & "flat" tappet cams

Thanks Doug, this is very interesting. In the case of API, the newer designations, such as SM, are meant to update and replace the older ones, which are then eliminated, like SG was. Since you mention both ACEA A1/B1 and A3/B3 as being issued at the same time, what is the difference between them?

ACEA 3 vs. JASO MA vs. SG,SH & "flat" tappet cams

True, but oil companies' main market isn't motorcycles. Used to be that an SG oil good for cars was good for bikes as well. Question is, SM may be good for new cars, but is it good for (all) bikes too? In the examples above, Rotella SM/CJ is said to work fine. However, it's a heavy duty oil...

ACEA 3 vs. JASO MA vs. SG,SH & "flat" tappet cams

Thanks wileyE. I know that the sheer amount of ZDDP isn't the only thing by which a motorcycle oil should be judged. The problem with the new API ratings is that they were designed with the new car engines in mind. Some manufacturers acknowledge that the formulation for the new oils isn't good...

ACEA 3 vs. JASO MA vs. SG,SH & "flat" tappet cams

Thanks whitesands. True, a rating doesn't mean a whole lot. I'd like to know what's in the oils, especially in terms of the additives needed for m/cycles, is there anyway to find out short of a VOA? They should disclose that stuff like on food labels, ***...

ACEA 3 vs. JASO MA vs. SG,SH & "flat" tappet cams

There's been debate recently about how the new oils (the ones rated SH, SJ, or even SG, SH, SJ as opposed to just SG work with flat tappet cam engines. I read in an article that ACEA 3 regulations, while aiming to meet the new emissions legislation, are also more careful to provide for enough...

Oil recommendation for Moto Guzzi V-Twin

Nice to see other Guzzi folks here. I'm fairly new, V11 Sport here. Since oil is one of those super sensitive religious subjects :D that keeps coming back on bike forums, I've gathered a lot of info from other Guzzi folks. The extreme is the famous "yak fat" :). The other extreme may be top...

Rotella 5W-40 CI vs. JASO MA

Thanks, good comments. I don't know about Goldwing, but I do have common engine & clutch oil in one bike. OTOH in the V11, which has separate oil for tranny, Guzzi has been recommending 5W-40. There's a theory that they went to this recommendation after they started using hydro valves on the...

Rotella 5W-40 CI vs. JASO MA

Thanks for the info. I guess the current Rotella 15W-40 CJ meets JASO MA, even if unofficially. But what I was wondering is why the JASO standard sets the sulphated ash max at that value. And usually the best products are as far from the max. allowed values as possible--it's the "exceeds" vs...

Rotella 5W-40 CI vs. JASO MA

I keep seeing Rotella 5W-40 (and it's still CI, until CJ actually replaces it) mentioned as an option for motorcycles. I'm sure it's a good oil, but I'm wondering about this: Even Shell acknowledges that technically it's not suitable for motorcycles because its higher ash content. This is the...

    Redline High Performance Oil

I've heard experts say the same: "Changing the fluid frequently is MUCH more important that what fluid is in the sump". Jaybird, I was also curious about the (Rotax?) paper you mention, even more that I got a Rotax on one of my bikes. Do you have a link?

Purolator oil filters for [censored] bikes

I've purchased recently Purolator L10241 for my V11 Goose. Haven't used any yet, but got this tip from a V11 owner, a retired design engineer who's very careful about anything like lubrication pressure, filters, etc. He's praising Purolator in general and seems totally happy with his choice of...

    GreenGrease?

I don't know much about Amsoil grease, but given the quality of their oils, I would assume it'the grease is good stuff too. Worth a try.

    GreenGrease?

Has anybody used this for their drive shaft U-joints? It's synthetic, lithium based and contains no moly (which fits at least part of the requirements for my bike's drive shaft). I pumped it to replace whatever was left from the factory grease. From the website it's supposed to be the thing...

Newbie Q: Parameters known, now WHICH grease?

Hello all, Great forum! As a newbie here I've already learned quite a bit about oils. I did my homework on grease too, but am still not sure what to pick for my new Guzzi (the grease is mainly for the shaft drive). Grease experts here could surely help with suggestions. So here's what they...
