Canadian Tire tire warranty (Question for Canadians)

The problem I find with Canadian Tire's warranty is that at the store level, the staff are poorly trained and/or incentivized to reject claims so it could be hit or miss. A prime example is when I tried to warranty a month old tire, the tech was trained to measure tread wear RELATIVE to the...

LoL, ask me how much O'Reilly brand alternators suck. Go ahead - AMA!

The thing about rebuilds, whether box store or local specialist...it's going to be a crapshoot. On some of the older vehicles I don't know if they can even get OE parts anymore like the regulator. Even if they could, getting completely good quality parts cost a lot more and it's likely not worth...

    3.6 liter Chrysler V6

Regarding all the horror stories on the plastic oil filter housing, is it inevitable that it will fail or can you just be careful everytime you do an oil change? Eg. It's technically the o-ring on the housing that does the sealing, not the threads. So IMO you don't need to be tightening the cap...

    Quick Question About Tire Wear

I've noticed as tires age, they seem to wear slower maybe due to it hardening. So that has me wondering if maybe getting the freshest tires might not be the best for squeezing out longevity.

Torn ball joint boots, tie rod boots, stabilizer link boots, but no noises or vibrations, should I care?

Re-booting the OE joint with an OE thermoplastic boot is the best way. Aftermarket joints always use neoprene boots which never last more than a few years. It's kind of frustrating actually.

    Buying ignition parts from Amazon

Not worth the risk. There are several barriers of entry for a seller to get on Amazon to be able to sell automotive parts, but once they're in there's not much QC to validate authenticity. They can easily re-box generic parts as OE and feed it through the distribution network and likely never...

Looks like motorad cooling products are taking over.

Used to be able to get a Motorcraft OE cap from RA. But I noticed it seems their selection of Motorcraft has been diminishing.

Mopar 10 year/150K mile premix coolant shelf life in opened container

I've always wondered about this. I know with oils, you pretty much can't trust the manufacturer recommended intervals anymore these days. 10 years for the initial change seems like a really long time for coolant, would be curious if there's any scientific basis behind that.

    Alternator testing

Voltage with the engine running should be 14-14.5V. it would also be a good idea to test for the AC ripple. Should be no more than 50 mV. I had a really flaky intermittent electrical problem that turned out to be the alternator. I think the diodes were starting to go bad and I was getting 150 mV...

Toyota OEM lower ball joints and 2 types of bolts.

I don't have much to comment but I had a 4Runner with a similar lower ball joint design which is really bad. Toyota messed up big time with regards to designing the suspension geometry such that the lower ball joint is under tension instead of compression. Means that when they wear out, the...

    Best Halogen Headlight Bulb?

There's still a stigma on LEDs, but if you look for a good quality one where they design the emitter to closely resemble a single point source AND that emitter is positioned where the halogen element would be, then those LED bulbs should be fine.

    noise reduction

Most modern cars have actually made huge improvements in NVH. Simply adding a layer of mastic products to areas like floors, door panels, trunks won't really make much noticeable difference in modern cars except in the cheapest, or basic of vehicles. You really have to tear everything down and...

How long do tires last (age) and how?

Tires and the understanding of the science on how to make good tires have gotten BETTER, but profit margins have gone down with competition, so marketing departments need to find ways to increase sales. Alot of this 6 year rule thing is marketing BS, under the guise of safety IMO. No tire <10...

    Pentosin CHF202 Alternatives or Substitutes?

Thanks! From looking around it appears the CHF 202 and 11s fluids are cross compatible. This is so confusing, the other aftermarket compatible brands (Like the Febi 06161) will reference compatibility with either 202 or 11s specifically only. But I'm guessing these brands can all be interchanged...

    Pentosin CHF202 Alternatives or Substitutes?

From looking at the specs, it appears CHF 11S (and therefore Febi 06161) is slightly superior to CHF 202? Lower pour point and better VI.

    Pentosin CHF202 Alternatives or Substitutes?

I was disappointed to find out that RA doesn't ship certain fluids to Canada. There's a bunch of Euro spec alternatives like the OEM brand from Canadian Tire, Prestone, Beck Arnley, and etc. Don't know if they are actually equivalent.

    Pentosin CHF202 Alternatives or Substitutes?

I'm in Canada so this stuff is $40/L at the cheapest. Up to $80/L at the dealerships! Car has 80,000km now. Last (first) change was 40,000km ago and the fluid is strangely amber color now, not dark green. Must be mixing with whatever was in there from the factory. Fluid doesn't appear that...

    Pentosin CHF202 Alternatives or Substitutes?

Yup, that's where I would get it. It's just surprisingly expensive! I'm thinking now maybe it would be worthwhile to run an inline filter and extend the intervals.

    Pentosin CHF202 Alternatives or Substitutes?

My Hyundai Genesis Coupe calls for Pentosin CHF202 as the OE power steering fluid, but this stuff is getting harder to find and is expensive. I tend to like to change out my PSF regularly on all vehicles just because gunk always seems to build up in the reservoir screen mesh. I understand this...

    good alternator brand

It all seems hit or miss. On the rebuilt units, what's stopping a non OE core from making its way into being rebuilt? Also, even when a unit is rebuilt, I doubt they're sourcing OE parts. Except if it's being rebuilt by the same company that makes it. I would almost be inclined to think that a...
