What PS Fluid do you use?

Totally depends on the car. I’ll go with “Fresh.”

    Toyota ... warped rotors

Toyotas are unfortunately known in my circles for having recurring brake warp issues. I had a gen 1 tundra that I simply could never solve this with. Some say it’s because they use smaller rotors to reduce unsprung weight to the benefit of vehicle NVH. I know of several sedans, both Toyota and...

    "Fuel Efficiency Standards Are Dead"

I’ll share a little. I was close with a guy who had the bmw disease. He just loved them. Became quite an adept diy bmw mechanic, while working IT. We are talking about personal 2 post lift kinda passion here. I helped him pull his first cylinder head, years ago. He had to sell them to justify...

What are you working on today?

Based on water intake, I produced approximately 1/2 gallon of sweat. That’s what I worked on today. The method of production included trimming mature boxwoods and holly bushes, which are too mature for my hedge trimmer - they don’t fit the teeth. Learned something. Those long sleeve light...

What are you working on today?

@Pablo @Tomioka - I tried the diode voltage booster mod in my 14 Lexus GS and it did not make a difference. Something changed, somewhere.

    Lets talk about new vehicles

We had a 97. That generation could be very long lived if you treated it like an on-road vehicle. It had the drivetrain and brakes of a truck but the unibody was less durable when ‘wheeling. Suspension was not capable of safely towing its rated class III capacity. Engine and transmission were...

Thoughts on the Acura MDX ?

We had a gen1. It was a hoot. Heavy little porker. Tepid AWD but perfectly capable in snow. noisy on the highway. Later versions became for more luxury oriented as less suv-street-fighter oriented. I’ve seldom heard complaints. Some years had oil consumption issues and warranties.

The Genesis is Gone - Farewell and Good Riddance

Lexus GS 350 Same size, perfect sized sedan. Great daily driver and highway cruiser. Snap shifts quickly and effortlessly. Engine delivers the goods when asked, with eager participation. Roll up rear window shade (great in high sun). Prioritizes AC and raises shift point when the compressor is...

What are you working on today?

Helped a friends son change his oil and rotate tires on a 2002 Lexus LS. This is a beautiful vehicle, a Japanese crown Vic. Grandma-owned, 100k miles, it weeps a bit of oil but runs smooth. Told him the next visit gets new brake fluid and transmission fluid. Mowed the swamp surrounding the...

NEW Vehicle Advice / Recommendations: Anyone? Subaru or Toyota? What says the gang?

I haven’t owned a Subaru in 20 years but after two I never went there again. Nothing bad about them, mine were quite good and served me well, but I found other vehicles for my use offered better functional matches. We were pretty much a Honda family until seeing a slight decline in their...

    Best/Worst A/C Performance in a car?

I remember reading that the BTU capacity of a gen IV long body town and country was adequate for a 2 bedroom apartment. Drivers need to cool the cabin from 120 to 70 inside of 10 minutes. A home may take 2 hours to come down from 90 to 70, but then it will stay there. A vehicle AC has to be...

    "Fuel Efficiency Standards Are Dead"

Just becuase the politics might swing doesn’t mean the auto industry will follow suit. They know the trend is for ever increasing efficiency, and they know that if they don’t innovate and develop technology they’ll be left behind by someone that does. I would advise not getting too rattled by...

    Engine hydraulic & backfiring probs

3 solid raps with a hammer on the engine plate where the cam sits regularly freed up a sticky compression release on my predator engine. Much easier than taking it apart every time to start it.

    2015 F-150 V6 Duratec issues

This engine is known to be very long lived. I’d want a solid diagnosis for certain before changing vehicles.

    INTERSTATE Deep Cycle Marine Battery

Battery may have useable life. Connect it to an old headlight (3 amps) and see if it runs it at least overnight, say 12 hours. A healthy deep cycle will be able to. Then let it charge for a week.

Does anyone here without a garage use a pop-up canopy tent?

I own 2 Home Depot fans … kind of maybe an orange 16” dia metal with 3 blade rotor. I also own one 36” belt drive fan from TSC. Dual 16” Home Depot fans are better than the singe 36. The 36 can’t throw - so it’s only effective at very close range or in a space where the air is contained or...

    Best/Worst A/C Performance in a car?

Newer Tacoma blows ice cold, but the ducts are small and loud and the system struggles against a poorly insulated cab. Probably on the side of less effective air I’ve had since … driving a vehicle without functioning AC. Infrared coming down from the ceiling and in from the door is very obvious...

Fuel system issue question - '93 Shadow 3.0

My ex had a 5MT Sundance when we were married, with the 2.5L NA. It had the pep reminiscent of my dad’s CRX SI, though without the handling. It stickered for under 10k new, with AC and an add-on sunroof. It was very nice car and fun to drive for certain. It ate up highway miles very nicely and...

    Roof Racks

You may try shifting the front crossbar forward or backward a little, and also make sure if it has a directional front (some do) that it is followed. In my limited experience the windbreak does make a difference.

What would you pay for this '97 GMC truck?

If you ignore the age, it was a running vehicle without AC and a small back seat. Assuming the driveline was pristine, I’m not surprised it sold for 5.5.
