    Chassis braces

Do you mean to say that it's 'all in one's head' ? ? ? I too wonder if a front tower bar would make a difference---honestly, I have doubts, a lot of doubt. THINK about it: if a car can be truly improved just with a bar---it'd be a no-brainer for the factory to install one and upcharge for it...

Raybestos Element3 calipers vs. ACDELCO brand-new calipers (They are EXACTLY the same, but priced very differently, BUT WHY???)

Thanks for chiming in folks. I just figured that market mechanisms wouldn't allow this sort of thing to happen--I haven't been around that long so the ACDELCO name means nothing to me basically. In fact, the Raybestos name is more well-known to me. So, this definitely wouldn't work.

    Mazda 3 - 1st gen review after ~3yrs

Thanks for the write-up. I almost bought a 2008 Hatchback 2.3, but got nervous because I heard the 2.3L was unreliable. I didn't want to replace my 2007 Corolla's indestructible powertrain with something that would give me problems. I kind of wavered back and forth on it, hoping to get one of...

I just had success with this fun CarFax "Money Hack"

FUN FYI: You can buy a 50 dollar CarFax report for 4 dollars here https://carfaxcheck.com/ I bought 2 reports this morning, one for each car I own. It just works, exactly as well as you hope and expect. (I believe these reports are European Imports, thus avoids custom taxes and so it's so...

    Walmart EverStart batteries longevity?

I might have been just 'lucky' but the ValuPower (Everstart value) I got in 26R size is lasting 5 years now (which is longer than the Kirkland Signature battery from Costco, and the Toyota OEM battery.)

A strange question: are cars made in this time of shortage (pandemic related) of the same quality as before?

You know, there may reallllly be something to this idea: https://www.yahoo.com/autos/2023-j-d-power-initial-160000286.html https://www.yahoo.com/autos/2023-j-d-power-initial-160000286.html I've noticed a number of brand new computer purchases that came defective straight from the factory: 2...

A strange question: are cars made in this time of shortage (pandemic related) of the same quality as before?

The basic idea is this: if there are shortages, there may be corners cut. If you can't source a particular part, or a part of equal quality, you may relax your standards a bit. We know for a fact that some features normally offered were no longer offered (temporarily.) This seems to be the way...

I'm recommending a Subaru Impreza for a fren's daughter (do you agree?)

A fren has come to me seeking advice for a new car for his just-turned-20 daughter. He's been out of the loop (he was never in the loop) when it comes to cars, so they will take my advice seriously. Naturally, he's leaning towards the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla as people generally do...

Automotive theory: tire sizes (how is this decided?)

How do automotive engineers/designers decide what tire size to give their cars? cars = any automotive vehicle, including electric cars. SUVs, trucks, crossovers, etc. are all included tires = the total size of the tire including the rolling diameter and the width (we will ignore wheel sizes)...

Automotive wiring.. have you ever used JB Weld (instead of soldering?)

First, JB Weld does not conduct electricity so we are not using JB Weld to establish the electrical connection between two wires but instead we are using JB Weld to secure the connection against tugs, pulls, pushes, etc. I haven't tried this yet and I never thought of it this way until I...

Excellent video SHOWING how infrequent oil changes destroy engines..

I never fully understood but now I do, it has to do with the bad oil gumming up and seizing those piston rings!

Do bigger (=taller, more rolling diameter, not necessarily wider) tires promote a 'better' ride over road imperfection (potholes, dips, etc.)

All else being equal* will a bigger tire handle road imperfections better? The idea is that road imperfections will seem 'smaller.' Imagine a giant tire going over a pothole mostly undisturbed but a smaller tire may well be swallowed up. Practically speaking, your larger tire will most...

Do you think this flood car can be "repaired" and then sold as a repaired salvage vehicle (or perhaps even clean!)?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10294429/Niagara-Falls-woman-drove-vehicle-river-DELIBERATELY-authorities-way-retrieve-it.html You will observe that this car is a current generation Toyota Camry (quite possibly a 2021 Camry.) Due to current market conditions, is this car repairable...

Do you think shortage-affected new cars are... "inferior" in some ways? Any concerns?

I can't be the only who thinks that cars being produced in the current climate of shortage *might* *possibly* *maybe* have *potential* problems down the road. If you're scrambling to find replacements and/or alternatives, you might relax some of those typical quality control and testing...

Are caliper "upgrades" worth it? Wilwood makes a static 4-piston caliper to replace factory 1-piston sliding caliper, for my Honda Fit.

Thanks. Based on everyone's input, the Wilwoods are mostly for looks only and are a waste of money.

Are caliper "upgrades" worth it? Wilwood makes a static 4-piston caliper to replace factory 1-piston sliding caliper, for my Honda Fit.

Thanks for the inputs, I'm wondering if static calipers are better than sliding ones though... and also what about the piston count, does that really matter?

Are caliper "upgrades" worth it? Wilwood makes a static 4-piston caliper to replace factory 1-piston sliding caliper, for my Honda Fit.

These are the kits they make for the 2012 Honda Fit: https://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKits/BrakeKitSearch?year=2012&make=Honda&model=Fit&option=Base&axle=Front+Kit In particular, I'm looking at this one...
