Why no Porsche recommendation for 5w-30?

My guess would be that a 40w holds up against fuel dilution longer than at 30w since it starts out thicker. If Porsche uses low tension rings like VW, dilution could be a bigger issue than in other motors.

Regarding intake valve desposits with DI..

I believe Toyota/Lexus solved this problem by letting low pressure injectors spray a little gas on the valve like it's always been done, while still using DI for the majority of the gas charge. It seems like a very easy and reasonable solution to me.

In Europe - Which of these is most likely to be GC

I wouldn't believe anything listed on the Castrol American site. Just look for VW 503.01, that's the long life high horsepower turbo spec and is used in the high performance Audi's. If it has that spec, you're at the top of the heap.

Final verdict: Green vs. Gold German Castrol ???

The gold came out in early 2005, long after the Porsche approval was gone.

5 qt jugs but 5.5-qt sump!

Just buy a 5 quart jug of 15w-50 for topping off the half quart in the beginning, and throughout the oci. This will keep the viscosity inline as the oil becomes diluted by fuel. And it will mix with any brand if you decide to change.

    03 Passat 2.8 oil recommendation

Wow, there's no telling how bad his gas mileage must have been with a filter that clogged. There is a spring loaded trap door in the floor of the air box that will open if the need for air is great enough, but it's unfiltered air. You may want to mention the fuel filter to him as well...

    03 Passat 2.8 oil recommendation

I have an 03 Passat 2.8. Any 502 rated oil will be fine, but if consumption is an issue, Pennzoil Platinum 5w-50 from NAPA has run great in mine, although it doesn't have the 502 approval. It will slow down the consumption after a few thousand miles. If he wants to stick with a 40w, the Pennzoil...

Valvoline 5W40 MST in Gasoline Engine?

This oil does not carry the VW 503 long life approvals, but it does have the VW 502 approval which means I can run it for 5k in my Passat. I would rather use the HST version with higher detergents though, just don't know where to get it.

    Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 Euro

Well, after about 6 weeks mine arrived today. Thanks Debbie and Pennzoil, now please just get somebody to carry it! There has to be a chain out there that wants to carry the only US Ferrari approved oil. I think I'm going to email/call Autozone and request they drop the Syntec 0w-30 and 5w-40...

I would pull the oil pan and check the oil pump, the screen may be clogged.
