Wife wants an electric car. You know how that goes.

That's a common EV feature. As I've mentioned before, after 2 years with an EV and no maintenance I had to buy an ICE just get my DIY fix.

    Project Farm... Torque Wrench Test

He's just being respectful of our time. Mine says "Torques" on it just the first two he tested. I assume that means it's approved by Jeremy Clarkson.

Nissan leaf first oil change 68,000 miles

With no magnetic drain plug you can't win. I tell Kona owners at change at 1,000 km as a balance between generation of break-in debris and that debris getting ground to dust. Every oil change in a Kona has been black and 2 were done early, at 2,500 miles (US) and 3,700 km (Australia).

Nissan leaf first oil change 68,000 miles

I was reading the related oil change post over at MyNissanLeaf. I posted there also in the other EVs subforum because the gear reducers are nearly identical in design other than that the Kona does not have any magnetic particle retention. The analyses data are not too wildly difference except...

UOA for Hyundai Kona Electric, high aluminium and silicon levels

So, in summary I'm going to take control of the particle issue by adding two magnetic drain plugs, see photo. Two oil changes got the oil color back to normal. The high silicon and aluminium are going to be ignored for now because there is no obvious source for the silicon and if the aluminium...

UOA for Hyundai Kona Electric, high aluminium and silicon levels

We've just had a second report come in, this time from a Canadian owner. I haven't looked closely at the numbers yet but it has the same high aluminium and silicon. I'm assuming the odometer is 15,600 km. Unsure what ISO COE is. Are those numbers going to be PPM, so directly comparable to the...

UOA for Hyundai Kona Electric, high aluminium and silicon levels

Yeah, that video is well-known among us owners but since the oil was out of a failed gearbox it wasn't immediately obvious if the dirty oil was a result, or reason for the failure. He's a good source though and quickly answered my question about the plug torque specs, info not easily found...

Mode 3 - UK Police Squad Car?

If you watch some reality UK police shows many of their BMWs don't even last their first set of tires.

UOA for Hyundai Kona Electric, high aluminium and silicon levels

This is not my car although I have the same model but my concerns prompted the owner to carry out an oil change and analysis at only 3,700 km for his 2021 model. The scheduled interval is 120,000 km. I changed my own at 19,400 km on my 2018 model but could not easily obtain an analysis. The...

    2022 KONA electric review ...

That Y photo took a long time to load, like 45 seconds. Must have come by boat. The Kona in the test is much the same as the original which I've owned for 3 years. It's good but I'd not buy another one. EDIT: ok , it's a 3, I forgot to read the post while wondering what's up with the slow loading.

Looks like Porsches may have a battery problem

Other than the oddly narrow temp range the storage recommendations don't seem out of line at first glance. -20°C to 40°C should be fine, especially if left plugged in. The back of the brochure also has warnings regarding battery care during driving and charging. But, I have only ever seen two of...

    Sandy Munro; food for thought...

I'm glad Sandy clarified his education background before starting. That helped me better understand his perspective. I'm often one of his biggest critics but I did find the presentation interesting and informative, but also a little weird. The analogy to a chess game seemed a bit unnecessary...

    EV's and old gas

After owning an EV only for 2.5 years I got bored with the zero maintenance and bought a small SUV as a "project car." I'm in the same situation but still manage to get through a tank of gas about every 3 months. I use the ICE for short trips around town and the EV for road trips, the exact...

    Electric vehicle maintenance

Because a handful Kona and Kia EV owners have had gear reducer reliability issues, I replaced my EV's factory-fill oil yesterday. For only 19,000 km I thought it was darker than I would have expected. My 4WD ICE diffs, transfer and even the manual transmission were way cleaner at more than twice...

    Ford electrified a 1978 F-100 pickup

Ah, thanks, that's the post I was looking to comment on. The Ford setup would use a resistance heater as in the Mach-e. That's not an ideal use of battery capacity but works. Guessing it might be in the region of 5 kW. The setup in the current Model 3/Y is more complex and interesting than any...

    Vehicle batteries

I think that's good advice and attaching a voltage logger such as a BM-2 makes it easy to keep an eye on things daily. My EV charges the 12V battery at 14.65 V every 4 hours while parked and uses an Intelligent Battery Sensor to monitor 24/7 and advise the car if more or less is needed when it...

Tesla 3rd quarter world car sales

According to Steven Ryan's latest Tesla video the increase was to manage demand. However, the Model 3 has dropped in price here in NZ and is now very competitive to other offerings. It's been the selling EV every month for a few months now.

    Ford electrified a 1978 F-100 pickup

On watching SEMA and Ford videos it's clear that it uses a drive system on both axles and looks like a very professional effort from the underside view.

    hybrid purchase

You can't beat Toyota's HSD system for reliability, efficiency and integration of an automatic transmission function, while other designs still need a separate conventional or DSG transmission. It appears that the new Ford Escape Hybrid will use the system, as they did with the original model...
