I keep getting these emails from medicine companies that show up as if it was sent from someone in my contacts. How do they do this? I don't understand how a company can assume someone else's identity as a sender. I never open these emails as I don't know what else, if anything is in them that could dump a virus on my computer. They all automatically go in the trash anyway...

One of two things here. Either they do have your contacts, or they have the other person's address/contacts.

So I'd make sure you didn't have anything on your machine you don't want.

Second, it's quite trivial to spoof an e-mail address.

If I had your e-mail, I could send you an e-mail that looks like it came from [email protected] in about 60 seconds time by hand.

Spammers and others have automated this process and can send millions of such spoofed e-mails.
