I have a side mirror that someone smacked with their door and punched a small hole in. I would like to replace just the outside of the mirror and keep the guts/glass. All I can find (new and used) is the whole unit. Is it possible to get just the outside? If so, what to call it? I tried "body", "shell" and "cover" to no avail.

What kind of vehicle? Ford will sell the skull cap on some applications. Those would be the chrome, black grain, or painted section of the mirror. The main housing is sold without it usually and then you buy the skull cap depending on how the vehicle was equipped. On some mirrors you buy the whole thing and then have the body shop paint it to match.
It's an '07 Sonata. Might have to get the whole thing. I don't mind, just my wife likes to save money...
