Why do thumbtacks insert more easily when you twist them?

They are not like screws where they bite into the panel and pry further inward.

It's the nature of cork. As you push into the cork, it will want to grab and compress on the spike of the tack. If you spin while pushing, the friction is less because you are creating rotational forces as well as lateral. It overcomes the resistance of the cork.
