OK, now that I've got you attention. This is a P1, PL30001, off my '95 F150. 4.9 L straight 6. The filter was installed for one year, but only 1,383 miles. G-OIL 5W-30. I had thought about leaving it on longer, but with all the Purolator tears, I decided to change it. Glad I did. If I'm reading the code right, manufacture date is May 11, 2011. The tear is on the relief valve end. The is also a small tear on the other end. Looks like a "wide V pleat" where the tear is. Enjoy.

There's no doubt Purolator has a serious issue with all these cases.

Your porn filter looks like it worked better than my Purolator. Ha!!!

This is obviously just another case of an excellent Purolator filter being used for far more miles than it was designed for and paired with an oil of the incorrect viscosity.

This is the first I've heard of this. Oh boy, now I need to check my filters. Maybe I should stick with the M1 filters. Those never fail.

I'm assuming the sarcasm tag was in effect

... or maybe Purolator needs to stipulate that their filters are only good for 500 miles - LOL. In actuality, it probably tore the first time the engine was ran.

That is some horrible pleat spacing near the seam on this one.

Poor QC on this one, looks short on media/pleating. Compare yours to the PL30001 and L30001 from 2014 linked below which look good, lots of media. And using the spreadsheet no 30001 have reported any issues. But I understand that doesn't help you, just as comparison.

Otoh, your recent PL14610 posting looks fine. So your results show no correlation to any prior info here.

PL30001 cut open

L30001 cut open.

That is unusually wide pleat spacing at the seam for that part number, I'd imagine it's what led to the tearing on this one. I have used and cut a couple of those and seen a bunch more posted and I don't remember ever seeing that wide of pleat gaps in one.

Thanks for cutting and posting!

You're welcome. That wide pleat spacing probably acts like a sail and makes for high flow resistance. I've got a Motorcraft filter on now.

Yep, the oil flow tries to push the pleat sideways which causes stress at the ends and then tears the media. You can do the same thing with your fingers by pushing sideways near the end of one of those widely spread pleats. It's not rocket science, that's why I would think Purolator could figure it out someday.
