Zinc Content in Synthetic Engine Oil:

Synergyn, M1 Racing, M1 motorcycle oils come close. You might try looking through here:VOA Library

And searching the Virgin Oil Analysis section might yield some others.

There's also additives like Powerservice Diesel Lube Oil Extender that may allow you to boost a 5w40 HDEO.

Hmmm...the highest zinc content oils currently are Valvoline Racing Formula (.20) and Kendall GT-1 (.16) both of which are petroleum based oils.

I prefer high levels of ZDP in any engine with a sliding tappet...Robert

It may be best to look at the whole AW add package than just compare the zinc content. It may prove wrong but I think that some of the zinc "replacement" adds are working out very well. Impresses me more to see an oil that has a fair dose of a few types of AW than one that just has a high zinc #.

WileyE: I agree with you to a point, but during endurance racing events, zinc seems to be the #1 friend of the camshaft lobes.

We have tested Moly and other types of EP additives, but ZDDP seems to be the best.

We ran Valvoline SAE 40 and STP for many years with open spring pressures in excess of 300 lbs without a lobe failure...Robert

SAE 40 and STP is pretty old school, isn't it?

The major advantage of zinc dialkyldithiophosphate as an anti-wear was cost. Now that the OEMs are restricting phosphorous levels in motor oils, you can't get the zinc without the phosphorous.

Something along the lines of an SAE 0 with some esters and/or alkylated napthalenes is what you tend to see these days.

Robert,

recall that zinc is only one component of the three components of ZDDP, and 20% is way too high in a daily driver, maybe ok for a racing engine oil.

An HDD oil might have 0.12% while the modern SL oils have about 0.06%.

Each 0.01% weight/weight yields approx. 100 ppm of material.

MolaKule: Mabye the decimal point is in the wrong place and it is 0.20% for the Valvoline Racing Formula.

Nonetheless, we never had any problems with cam lobes when using that oil.

What are the zinc percentages of Red-Line, Amsoil and Schaeffer's???...Robert

The combination of SAE 40 and STP, though, certainly meant a horsepower loss.

ZDDP is still used in relatively high quantities in some motorcycle oils and motor oils that aren't designed to meet current OEM requirements. Due to catalytic converters there is a move to drop the phosphorous levels, which precludes large doses of ZDDP.

The same thing is accomplished with some of the esters and ANs that are added to hydrocracked base stocks and synthetic base stocks that are far beyond anything we used to have.

Robert just buy a nice Add package and dump in all you want called LZ 1395 or email me I'll send you a quart it treats at 1%-1.5% or so so 1 quart would about double the ZDDP in 25 gallons of "regular SL motor oil. Bye the way is a street named after your family in Fresno?

Mickey M: Horsepower loss....with 650-700 horsepower on tap, it was never a concern. Finishing a race was...

416 Rigby: Thanks!!!

Bruce: Yeah...Herndon Avenue they say...Who makes LZ 1395???...Robert
