Zero Weight Oils and Base Oils Questions

What base oils allow for Zero weights like 0-20, 0-30, 0-40 etc?

Can group III or mixes with Esters and PAO's acheive the Zero classifications?

0w20 and 0w30 can probably be made with nothing but typical Group IIIs that have VIs in the 125 to 130 range. To make a 0w40 from nothing but Group III I think you would need a wax isomerate like Shell's XHVI with a VI of 140+.

And a VII. I do not think they have a XHVI in the 14 CsT range.

Of course. That goes without saying. I think a 5w20 or 0w20 is probably the only PCMO you could potentially make with Group III and not have to use any VI improver.
 
As a related question, does anyone know of any physical characteristics of base oils that would influence Pennzoil to use PAO in Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 while they were utilizing EOP for PP Xw30s? And just as importantly, would those characteristics influence the decision to continue PAO use for Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 while shifting PP Xw30s to a Group III base?

I realize that I don't "know" that Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 was and is PAO based, but that is my current conclusion based on Johnny's input. I also realize that both cost and EOP supply could have been a factor. In any case, without dragging Pennzoil through the mud, are there physical properties of EOP that hinder its use in a Xw20 formulation?

There are Group IIIs that have the Noack Volativity, CCS and viscometrics to make excellent 5w20s. You can make a GF-4/SM 5w20 out of Group II+ for that matter.

bruce and others might have a better idea about this since I haven't seen any specs on the EOP basestocks.
