Today drained, flushed and refilled my 2000 Taurus with Zerex G-05. Originally came with and was maintained with the conventional green. I located some after searching several sources at a local NAPA store about $11.45 a gallon. It has little to no sweet scent, is a very pale yellow color, after dilution nearly clear. I could not help but wonder if it will retain this pristine clear look over the "5 Year/150,000 Mile Protection"? Anyone using it for some time notice darkening or discoloration? Now that the green is becoming scarce would you use it in an 1989 Ranger? G0-5 would seem to be a better choice than Dex Cool or clone?

Thanks

If you read the thread marked "Nasty Stuff In A New Car" you'll see quite a lot of info regarding the ramifications. You're right about the color, it's a real light amber in the puke-tank.

Funny thing is, I ran about 6 flushes of distilled water with several minutes of idling to heat it up and move the old fill out of the engine and core. The water was very hot and very clear, heater hoses hot going in, warm out, so I know it circulated through there, and the radiator had a nice flow through it after warm up. Little tsunami in there. Nice and clean, no green. Now, a few days later, after puking and pulling out of the tank for a few miles, it's a darker color, not green, but not as amber. Color has changed, I'm sure it's fine, but it IS different. Maybe I'll drain the radiator one more time and refill with fresh G05 and distilled to be sure, but it's ok for now.

I flushed mine out until the distilled water came out clear, then I ran a 6 hour cleaner through it, then I flushed the system out again approx. 10 more times with distilled water and draining the engine block and radiator until I felt all the cleaner was out, and then I filled up with a 70/30 mix of G-05 and distilled water. I am protected to about -45 F. I did all of that last September and my coolant is still as clear as when I finished it.

G-Man II: Yeah I also wish it was an easier to see color. John Deere is suppose to also be G-05 and green-colored. I have been debating about switching mine out to that but I am still debating it as I wonder if it is safe to use coolant designed for deisel engines in a gasoline engine. It might have extra additives good for deisel but bad for gas or something. I might be wrong.

G-05 is G-05 so don't worry about John Deere's coolant being diesel specific. It isn't if it's G-05.

My 99 Chrysler came with Mopar G-05 coolant from the factory, which is dyed oranged (almost the same color as DexCool). I had them change it out two years ago using the coolant system flushing machine. I supplied them with six gallons of distilled water and two gallons of Zerex G-05. They purged the system until it had nothing in it but distilled water. Then they dumped the two gallons of G-05 into the holding tank and two gallons of distilled water (for a 50/50 mix) and filled the system.

After two years the coolant in the overflow tank is still not cloudy or murky at all. It's clear. In fact, it's so clear I still have to wait until the engine is cold and remove the tank cap to see the fluid inside. I don't know who had the bright idea at Zerex to color their G-05 such a pale gold, but it was a stupid move IMO.
