Yup a Magnefine work - even backwards>:(

Hey everyone

Well I installed a magnefine trans filter on our versa last sept - and after a recent fluid change realized that it was installed backwards arg- for almost 30,000 kms!
Called Magnefine and the person I spoke to, said the filter will still work backwards but will not have the pressure valve release function.
My trans is shifting fine - no noticeable problems.

I have unscrewed the filter to inspect it. Nothing on the inner pleats - but a decent ammount of fine black dust on the magnet.
The paper filter can grab stuff as low as 35microns - I guess this stuff was smaller> and kept at bay by the magnet.

I have since installed a new filter-proper direction-
great product - dare I say idiot proof>

I suppose if the paper filter had clogged up I would not have been so please with myself. So far so good.

I think all people see the arrow but they don't know which way the ATF flows.

I originally called the dealer to confirm what hose was the return line - they were wrong

This past weekend, a little voice in my head told me to check again>

How many miles do you plan on leaving the Magnefine on ?

I was thinking about installing one on my mom's Honda but I don't know which way the ATF flows. I wish more cars had a spin on traditional oil filter that can easily be replaced every 50K miles.

Make sure the ATF level is full-
Grab a friend - pull both lines and start the engine for a few seconds .

The jug with the rising fluid is your pressure line, the other is the return.

On ,my second magnefine I will-
run the filter for 20,000 - pull and clean the magnet, inspect the filter, and probably re-use for another 20,000kms.
So total 40,000kms -
On the first filter after inspection/cut of the paper media, there was nothing - debris was only on the magnet.

Hyundai's recommended ATF replacement procedure involves running the engine for 1 minute or until the ATF stops coming out, whichever comes first. So apparently the AT won't melt if you run it briefly in such a manner.

The return line will usually be the lower one, of the two that come out of the cooler. You don't need to disconnect both lines; just disconnect the lower one and you will be able to tell if it's the return by which side the fluid comes out on.

I just bought a Magnefine and the arrow is half obscured by the sticker, which wraps around too much and partially covers it. Not very smart of them.

I've seen the inside of Manefines, and the flow runs the reverse of what I thought it would. It goes through the magnet first.

Well on new transmissions instalations you install to the cooler first. On existing, you install from the cooler to the transmission. Pull a line to see which way it's going. Of course have a buddy at the key switch to shut off the engine quickly.

Also after say 15 minutes of driving, not idling, the return will be cooler to the touch.
