BTW- C&D did a "Cheap Speed" shootout w/

Acura RSX Type-S
Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged
Dodge SRT4 ACR
Saturn Ion Red Line
Subaru Impreza WRX

Which do you think won?

What makes this car a Goliath beater is that it's an 8100-rev-ripping steroidal slot car on weekends and an intellectually sophisticated upscale six-jewel commuter on weekdays. Plus, when your neighbor asks what car you bought, it sounds way cooler to say Acura than Dodge—another reason why Acura's offerings so firmly hold their resale values.

Acura's recipe is worth copying. The engineers created the lightest and lowest car in this group, then added the highest-revving engine but with the least vibration, which they then mated to a six-speed box that shifts so fluidly that it's like working the Tiptronic levers on a Porsche 911. It feels as if the shift linkage, the throttle, and the short-stroke clutch were magically interconnected and giving one another instantaneous instructions and heartfelt advice
In this quintet, the Acura proved the most neutral in the hills and was the only car whose tail could be rotated with a dash of trail braking, thus avoiding the dreaded plow endemic to everything else in this group. On the skidpad, the RSX beat all comers.

What's more, its trunk is the largest—okay, so it's a hatchback, but it's hard to tell from most angles—and the RSX simply embarrassed the pack with its built-in-Japan fit and finish. The dash is covered in a fetching rubberized grain that resembles expensive fabric, and the standard perforated-leather seats look like those in the tip-of-the-flagpole RL. The tiny, leather-wrapped wheel is just the right thickness and is as gratifying to grasp as a new Rawlings softball. Even the door inserts are swathed in delicate, pale cow skins, lending the cockpit a bright, luxurious feel.

Why don't the rest of the cars in this group offer cockpits as airy and fun? Why don't they offer decklid spoilers as subtle and tasteful? Around town, the RSX is so agile, so light on its feet, so neatly balanced, so crisp at step-off that we voted it Most Likely to Carve Traffic into Invisibly Thin Slices. Close your eyes, and the RSX Type-S is like driving a Honda S2000. Okay, so maybe you shouldn't close your eyes too long. Just long enough to sign a check for $24,240.

The Verdict: A showcase of engineering, style, speed, and grace. Luxurious cockpit, world's slickest front-wheel-drive shifter, balance and agility of a ballerina.

I have a Sentra (2001) I have a relative who has a TSX. I think the RSX represents a great value when compared to the Spec. (I am no way talking down the Spec). But as I said compare the two cars closely.

The other thing is the Spec Engine is not a bastion of reliability. Now I realize that the Spec is sold to the younger crowd who would blow an engine on almost any car they drive. But it is interesting when you look at the same car and the older bullet proof SR20DE engine. Even kids couldn't blow them up.

Finally you get Acura Service wich I have observed is pretty darn good. They appear to treat the customer very well. The engine from what I have been able to learn is very reliable.

Its likely I will be selliong my 01 Sentra to my daughter in the near future and I will be buying either the RSX or the Civic Si. The Corolla is still in the running.

Auto Union, I have never paid more than $17,000 for a car. Looking at the parking lot dings on my current three-year-old ride, I’m glad I don’t have more money tied up in it. “Cheap Speed” is a matter of relativity … and you bought the base model, not the Type-S.

Look, I’m not saying the RSX was a bad car at all, but I do think it was way overpriced and not a logical replacement for the beloved Integra. When the Integra was first introduced, it was a slightly larger version of the Civic, geared more towards performance and costing another 15%-20%. The RSX is still, after all, a modified Civic … but costing another $8-10,000.

And again, I might have been willing to pay a premium for its slick 6-speed, 200hp engine and the well tuned (but unfortunately deboned) suspension, but not if I had to pay for thousands of dollars worth of mandatory ‘luxury’ features that merely add weight and mechanical complexity to the vehicle. According to others in this thread saying the car is being discontinued, so I wasn’t alone in passing on the RSX.

And with the introduction of the 2006 Honda Civic Si, the RSX won’t be missed by many. If I were to buy another new car two years or so from now, the Civic’d be the one. It’s got the terrific Honda powertrain without the pricey ‘luxury appointments’ of dubious value. Really, I don’t care whether it has an “H” or and “A” on the front as I’m running through the gears on the twisty bits.

The car companies are always trying to get their customers to shell out more money for more mandatory featrures as a way to pad their profits and it turned me (and others) off. Acura tried to mix ‘luxury’ with ‘hatchback’ and most people went “huh?”

The RSX was the dog food this dog refused to shell out more money for ... evidently along with tens of thousands of others.

So, if you like your car fine. I just thought I’d share my views on it as I considered myself to be a prime candidate for the RSX and again, evidently a lot of other people like me (former Integra owners) felt that same way and bought something else. We were more ‘purists’ who enjoy the art/fun of driving a well made, well tuned car but aren’t enamored of too much bling-bling or luxury frills.

PS: Nice photo. The Realtime guys still campaign at least one RSX, but their top drivers all drive the more capable TSX. Jerome Zimmerman told me a few years ago that they knew they had a steep learning curve with the then new RSX (as opposed to their championship-winning Integra Type-Rs), but the car never became super competitive. Now, as P.D. Cunningham and Pierre Kleinubing vie for the checkered flag in their TSXs, the team’s RSX driven by (????) is lucky to finish in the top ten. And Honda Civics, once plentiful in the series, have all but disappeared ... probably for the same technical reasons.

PPS: If you know of a well-cared-for used Type-S in the Albany-Saratoga area, that the owner is dying to sell, let me know.

Geez, 3 years? I remember when you were soliciting ideas before buying.

I think the RSX being dropped has something to do with Acura moving away from selling $20k cars and the headaches from dopey kids who buy them (see: clubrsx.com- a nightmare). Pricing-wise Civic Si is a better deal than RSX-Type S. The car is selling at invoice now though. I looked at new Civics, with a much-needed sunroof, it was no give-away price and a whopping 140hp vs 160 for my base car. For what I paid and what the Base RSX offers, I am floored....a no-brainer, 16" alloys, S/R, remote entry, heated mirrors, CD, 50k/4yr warranty...34 mpg. My last car was $28k for a stripper B6 A4q, this car was $10k less and if I can get excited about a $18k car...that says something. btw- Bror, does your Sentra have double-wishbone???

Al, you’ve got a LOT OF NERVE saying that. It was after all YOU who got me to look at the Sentra SpecV back in early 2003!

Just kidding … sorta.

Seriously, the QR25DE seems to be a pretty good motor … provided it doesn’t swallow its butterfly screws or ingest its cat’s guts.

Yes GROUCHO, I started that thread of mine over three years ago.

Hard to believe it, eh? Time flies! For a while, “Bror’s new car” was the longest running thread on BITOG. I believe that honor now goes to the “Calling all Investors” thread.

Auto-Union, the base RSX might be a lot of car for the money (especially now), but I personally would never have been content to buy one knowing there was a hotter version available. I really wanted a 6-speed. You might be right about Acura dropping it because they are sick of dealing with kids thrashing their cars then crying for warranty work. I’d say the same thing about my SpecV … and kids are bound to start killing the new Civic Sis pretty soon. Too bad because I like these same factory ‘tuner’ cars but I know I wouldn’t want to deal with the spoiled, whiney brats that don’t know how to drive if I owned a dealership.

.

And yes, the current (new) Civic Si a hot item and going for invoice, it’s not exactly a steal if you compare out-the-door prices with the RSX Type-S. That’s OK, I’m gonna wait a year or two for things to cool down before I seriously consider another new car.

No, the Sentra has a suspension arrangement more reminiscent of the 1st generation Integra. I wasn’t thrilled about it, but I was so angry with Honda at the time and none of the cars they offered in 2003 appealed to me. I’ve already said my piece on the RSX. The last generation Civic Si was seriously ugly, had that weird shifter and was significantly slower than the SpecV. I didn’t want an Accord … too big and not sporty enough. I got the Sentra because I ruled out everything else in the class. Mazdaspeed Protégé was more $$$, had ‘only’ a 5-speed and I didn’t like the idea of driving a boosted stock-block motor. The Ford Focus SVT was quick and agile (and had a 6-speed!) but only got 25mpg on the highway and the Focus’s reputation is fair at best.

I like the Accord Coupe'. Looked at Scion Tc for a sec. Anyway, I'm getting 31 mpg and driving pretty fast. ClubRSX.com is Idiot Central and I think it's really a waste of my time.

What do you expect when mommy & daddy buy their little son a new RSX-S and he destroys it within the first year.

If the RSX is anything like my fiancee's 94 integra in terms of quality, then it IS bulletproof, but the people who select materials should all be canned. Kaizen my rear when you look at their selection in rubber and plastic... oh and where they locate the oil filter.

All the same at 174k, hers still puts out 31+ MPG, and if the stinking clutch wasnt so bad in feel (a friend had the same issue with his 4dr integra), it would be totally fine for 171k more. Were planning to keep it for that long if we can anyhow.

The hatch really does have its utility. Though its not a hatch the lke of the old civics, dodge colts, etc., it really is great... Im sure the RSX is the same.

A problem that I have in the integra and had somewhat in the RSX was headroom... Im 6ft 4 or so, and I dont like my seat reclined so that I can fit.

I almost bought an RSX, until the idiot acura dealer told me that Acuras were all fairly priced so they dont give markdowns from MSRP. I tild him that he had to be kidding and walked. Got a well set up brand new saab, which has more space, power and better fuel economy than the base RSX for $23k.

Do I care about resale? Honda resale setups are about as idiotic as they can get... a $2-3k savings on cars that sometimes are 3 years old and have 20-30k miles? no thanks, Ill buy a new car that is a known quantity, and drive it until i derive sufficient utiity from it to satisfy what I paid.

All the same, I know Id have been happy with an RSX had I been offered a deal... There is a good place for real economy cars that are upscale and though they might not have high performance, have the hardware to make them top notch... Thats why I love my 134 hp 1991 BMW 318i. Too bad such cars dont really exist... the RSX is probably the last... unless that hatchback MB c-class is still around. I kind of consider my saab along those lines... it really is more or less a base model without too many of the fancies that will break.

I wonder if the RSX would have done better if a sedan version was offered too. The integra had a sedan, was it that slow of a seller?

Yea that's a bad one. Well, you probably made the right move. I think that the engine will hold up if its not severely abosed. Nissan is known for good engines. For me the Spec would just not be an option bc I need an auto (wife won't buy into a manual anymore)

I loved the little sentra 1.8s auto trans rental car I had out in pittsburgh... very nice little car - probably one of the best out there.
