Your Best and Worst MPG Car

Best-the ‘07 Corolla 5 speed in my sig-topped 43 MPG twice recently running 2-lane at 55 MPH recently (with~5-600 pounds of tools & parts crammed in, no less)!
Worst-the 13,000 pound loaded F-450 in my sig, it MIGHT make 10 MPG diesel on a good day…

My best ever was 42 mpg out of an old Toyota pickup. My jeep,fj and f250 get about 14.

Many years ago I had a 69 Chevelle. I put an 11:1 compression 302 in it with a mild cam,2 bbl, dual exhaust and it had a 3 on the tree with 3.08 axle gears. It got 26 mpg repeatable on the hwy

The '54 Chevy (listed below) 3-speed manual might've averaged as much as 18 mpg. About 20 at best. With a 3.70 axle ratio, it was geared too low for efficient or quiet cruising.
The Prius averaged 59.5 mpg last year. Up to about 80 under favorable conditions, if I'm careful and not in a hurry.
My best non-hybrid was the Mazda 5-speed, which usually managed mid-40s, occasionally over 50 for a tank.

Best: 2017 VW GTI, I could easily get 36mpg keeping it out of heavy boost

Worst: 2007 Nissan Frontier 4.0V6 (2WD). 15mpg on a good day. I got 18mpg a couple times driving it from Mississippi to Pennsylvania driving through Alabama and some of Tennessee. After that it got way too hilly.

Bonus: My "old" 2021 Tacoma 3.5L V6 with the automatic got roughly 2mpgs better than my current 2022 V6 manual. Kinda interesting, but not surprising. The auto would shift into a higher gear ASAP whereas I like to wind things out a little bit more.

2018 Rav4: 28 (commuter)
2020 Tundra: 17 (90% highway very little short tripping)

What cars you owned gave you the worst and best mpg?

My worst was a ‘65 mustang 4.7 L V8 that got 18-20 mpg on the highway.

Best is my 2015 1.0 L ecoboost Fiesta that gets 46 mpg.

Both cars weigh 2700 lbs and have about the same interior space. Mustang’s trunk seemed bigger but specs say not. Fiesta’s faster acceleration even though hp is less on comparable rating. Most be the torque curve is better.

The 1.0L came in the fiesta over here? I did not realize that; I had the 1.0L in my focus and 40mpg was easily achievable at 70mph.

Worst was the Evo, 23mpg untuned @ 55mph, 27 tuned.

Best is the current Integra, gets about 30 in normal driving. Some trips around 35.

Worst was my 2018 Challenger SRT with the 392, got around 16. Totally worth it, that car was a blast to drive and ultra comfortable to boot.

1963 Chevy Impala 350 CI V8. Hand down from my parents. 12mpg.

2022 Honda Insight Hybrid. 1.5L w/Electric Motor. 75mpg with mild hypermiling.

In the current fleet the worst is the Jeep Gladiator (Loaded Rubicon w/35's) at 15.5 with most of that highway. The best is probably my CTS with about 21.2 avg. In between is the RAM at 17.7 and the Grand Cherokee is at 22.5. This is all per the driver info screens. One vehicle I don't know about is my 78 CJ7 but I doubt its more than 15 tops. The other vehicles, including the Vettes are about 18-20mpg

All decades ago, but the worst would be a three way tie between a '88 D150 2wd 318/998 a '73 Fury 360/727 and a '68 GTO 400/Muncie. All about 10-12 locally and no more than 15-16 on long trips. Actually, I can think of 6 other full size or midsize V8 cars/trucks that I owned that would all be in that zone.

By a small margin the best has been a current '13 Scion XD 1.8/4 sp. auto that only gets 30 mpg locally but will consistently do 38-40 hwy. Very little frontal area. Ten other small cars I have owned would easily match the local figure but were a little less on the slabs.

At typically upper 30s to mid-40s, the Subaru (also listed below) didn't do quite as well, despite slightly lower weight, lower frontal area, and an even smaller engine. The reason was primarily gearing, 4.02 vs. 2.82 engine revolutions per (same size) tire revolution in top gear.

Here they are. The VW was a TDI.

My worst was a 1968 Chevrolet Sportsvan with a 307 ci V8. It got 13 mpg.

My best was a 2009 Volkswagen TDI diesel Jetta. It got 44 mph.

My current BMW turbodiesel gets 23-27 mpg,

The Lezus RX350 gets 22-26 mpg, and

the Corvette gets 22 to 24 mpg.

BEST:.......... 1979 VW Rabbit Diesel. An honest 52 MPG highway.

WORST: .....1970 Chevy Nova SS 396-375 H.P. 3:55 rear axle, Muncie 4-speed. Holley 850 Double Pumper 4-barrel carb. About 6 to 8 MPG city on leaded Sunoco 260.

Worst Mpg: My 2008 V8 4x4 Pathfinder. 18 on highway
Best Mpg: my 2014 altima 40+ mpg on highway (and at higher speeds than the SUV)
