The young man that rang me up asked how long I run my oil. I
told him and he then recommended I send an analysis to Stavely
Labs ( to know how much longer I can run it.) I told him I
familiar with Blackstone but have never used it. He then said
they are a good lab but affiliated with BP and possibly
biased. He then said his favorite oil is Valvoline Synpower
because it has the most zinc allowed by the EPA and that
benefits the engine he has. I may or may not agree with him but
admired his interest and knowledge.

Hey tell him to check the latest voa on Valvoline 5-30 I think the zinc is only

700.

I used to work behind the counter, from first hand experience I can say that no one, absolutely no one had any real knowledge of oil.

Did you educate him about Redline breakin additive

or im getting this oil. Which grade ?

This is very true. except, perhaps, "get thick oil its the summer it will protect your engine by cushioning the moving parts with a thicker film and it wont break down" or "you want a thicker oil in the hot summer."

is this still good advice

Agreed. Sounded like at least he had a real interest. I would have pointed him here.

At least he wasn't like "RUN 20w50 in EVERYTHING, and used FRAM ONLY!".

I was in AAP the other day buying a Mobil 1 filter, and just for kicks i asked the guy if i could run the Mobil 1 longer than a puro classic. He looked dumbfounded and said, "oh no you'll still want to change the oil and filter every 3000 miles, no matter what oil/filter you use."

I think that is good advice.

A waste of good oil and filter.5000 miles is the new and current 3000 mile oc imo.

Yep. At least he was honest vs trying to sell me on the pricier
oils I was buying.

I think you can maybe tell the BITOG guys at the parts store if we are taking a very long time at the oil aisle, looking at and intently reading the bottles. of course, we do not know what the guy/girl (?) examining the oil is looking at or thinking (this bottle is SN this is SM, this one is SL?) ... but it is a ponderance.

Pennzoil Conventional is the universal fall-back and i prefer a conventional or blend with a little bit of a ZDDP additive, with few exceptions.

The guy is just looking out for the business. 3000 mi on syn and Mobil 1 filters will be a lot of money for them. No one can blame him for their engine blowing up either!
