YOU THINK THIS IS OVERKILL...USING Mobil 1?

Recently began using M1 Synthetic in my 2000 Dodge Caravan. 76k on odometer. Driving mostly short trips in town, but also used as the family vehicle for highway trips. The short trips consist of 1-2 miles in extremes of both hot and very cold weather.
Typically put 2000 miles on van in 3 months time. I was wondering what the consensus would be using M1 in this vehicle? Anyone else have the same vehicle and using M1 in it? It has the 3.3L. Or, do some of you think I should have continued on using conventional and changing it every 3-4 months? I was previously running Valvoline Premium Conventional in it.

M1 is an upgrade oil from what you were using. You can also do longer oci's with M1 vs. conventionals.

Overkill ? Not if you could get it for qt.

I would be inclined to use 5W30 TropArtic blend ($1.68/qt Walmart) at 4500 mile changes. Conaco base oil like Motorcraft blend. Pick up a SuperTech filter while you're there.

I've heard of these things going 300-400K in taxi applications.

Well, you've got a fine, mostly GrIII oil in there, I wouldnt call hat overkill at all. Now the price the M1 costs...... that's overkill

I've switched to synthetics in cars that had over 100k on them.

Never got around to it, but I was planning switch on my 245k Ford Festiva, but between AutoRX runs and rinse runs, I wound up selling it first.

Where did you find out the basestocks? Apparently lots of our members here have been finding out ingredient secrets of several motor oil brands.

NO! It is not overkill. Mobil 1 is a fine product and I would have no problem at all using it in your application.

SFCP, how can you ask if an oil is overkill without saying what the OCI is going to be?

That's a good point JAG. Life here in BITOGLAND would be so much better if the people that "know" all this great information would share where they learned it. Then we could learn it ourselves and not rely on them to educate us.

Take my word for it - get your ducks in a row, or... duck.

SFCP, M1 handles our short trips fine - I use M1 - my wife make 5 or 6 one to two mile trips a day. Had a good UOA (dipstick sample) at 4.3k. Blackstone was fine with me pushing it on to 10k and re-sampling.

Life in BITOGLAND is probably somewhat static - ie, may not improve that much - ie, for each learner there'll be a non-learner. BUT, for the learners, learning how to logically think and argue your way out of a wet paper bag is a process. There's probably quite a few people that are pushing that learning curve (me included) and realizing the error of gut feelings and "my cousin's friend told me..." stuff. Getting shot down helps push that learning curve. And it's tough getting shot down - pride can slow the learning process - I felt the pain on that SynPower discussion where I (here) admist I was trying to back pedal and save face in the process.

M1 will serve you well,use it, and it's on sale at wal-mart
right now for under $20 for 5qt jug.

Check that fuel dilution isn't thinning the oil due to short trips. Is M1 overkill? There is no such thing. However, it may not be ideal for your application. JMO

My advice go with Supertech oil or an oil you can pick up cheap on rebate. Change every 3-4k and put the money that you didn't spend on Mobil 1 away. You'll need it when your transmission goes. The engine in that vehicle will far outlast the transmission no matter what oil you are using.
