I have 10w30 in my econo 4cyl with just over 1K miles. The owners manual says to use 5w30 when temp could drop below freezing, it looks like the mileage interval will be in the freezing condition where I live. Should I swap out the oil for the lower grade? The car isn'r used that much.

Keep on stompin' with your econo-cruiser tasting 10w30. Very little difference between the two viscosities. Many 5w30s start-out thicker than 10w30 anyways. You are beginning to see some shearing at 1K - so it's thinning as the miles pile up.

Just my opinion...

I wonder if you could drain the 10w30 out and save it till it gets warmer? lol... Drive the car for a good 20 minutes or so and then store it in a dry place with a moderate temperature until you need it maybe. I have no idea if that would work. Would the oil even be worth saving to you?

For an oil of the same general quality, I wouldn't think switching to a 5w30 would save you all that terribly much in the way of fuel economy or wear, but I suppose it just depends on what your driving habits and the car are like. "Isn't used that much" is a given, but is this like you making 10 short trips a month, or 2 long trips a month? Know what I'm getting at?

Need more details about the car.

Before 5w30 became en-vogue, everyone ran 10w30 in the winter. I owned 7 cars in Wyoming that all survived and thrived in the harshest winters using Castrol 10w30. Won't hurt a thing.

The difference in the grades isnt anything significant until
about -10 to -20.
While NY can get that cold it certainly isnt often.
I wouldnt worry about it.

You could thin it down by draining off a quart (save for top up) and adding a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil, or some other thin stuff.

So Greaseball, you gave up on your 2k OCI on the other thread you started and decided to try to start a new argument here?

This is no argument. I going brain picking here, based on the experience and suggestions of knowledgeable forumites.

During my short tenure here, I can now honestly say that
an oil forum can be as contentious as some of the
gun boards that I frequent...

I agree, this is ridiculous. The Mobil 1 group III panic has gone to everyone's heads

Lets get back on topic at the original thread, and give this guy a break.
