You and Cooper tires......

Okay, I need some opinions on these tires, from those who have them.

A good buddy of mine is getting ready to buy tires for his car. At the moment, he is between Goodyear and Cooper tires.


I think his biggest question is how these tires wear, followed by wet traction.


As much as I know about about Cooper (Mastercraft,Dean, American,kenra) and the tires, I've never tried one. (yet)


Gee, I seems like everyone I know is buying tires or something these last few months.....

You can't go wrong with Goodyear. Of all the cooper tire's I've seen at Pepboys, the tread design on the cooper's seemed to be to wide spread, the sidewalls were to soft, and there didn't seem to be much quality or love built into it.

I've had good luck with Cooper Tires on my Echo. Good tread life, quiet, much better than the Potenzas that came on the car. Currently on my second set.

The Cooper Lifeliners I have on the back of my truck have more than met my expectations. I know there more than five years old and have over 75,000 miles and I'll probably have them replaced before winter. Currently have the Michelin Hydroedge on the front and are happy with them so far.

I've always had good luck with the sets of Cooper Trendsetters and Discoverers I've bought over the years. Cooper retailers are also of the lesser shady variety in my area too. The rest? not so much with respect to tire shops.

Thumbs up for Cooper as far as light truck tires.. I have had a set of Discoverer STTs for a few years now and tread is still great even after a few trips to the dirt/rocks.

On a side note, have him look at Kumho tires, specifically the Solus series. Those have seemed to get good reviews on Tire Rack.

I have posted this before, but the Copper CS4's are quietest tire I have every put on a vehicle. The bonus to me is, they are made in the USA.

Forgot I also had a set of Lifeliners on our Windstar. Very smooth and quiet. Good winter traction.

Uh ....... Mmmmmmmmm ..... uh.........

You didn't tell us which tires he was considering - only the brands. Each of these brands - and pretty much all of the other tire brands - have levels of performance that vary greatly within the brand.

One of the ways to determine what the performance level for given tire is to reference the UTQG rating - and guess what? There is a rating for both wet traction and treadwear.

You'll hear a lot of comments about these ratings - and comparing between brands, correlation to real world, etc. - but the ratings are at least as good as getting opinions expressed on unknown models.

Every brand has good and bad models. Post the size and prices for some models he would consider.

Are we talking Integritys vs CS4? That would be a miss-match, CS4s are great, but compared to the new Eagle GT or Response Edge, that would be a closer comparison.

I have owned Cooper Cobra, Weathermaster ST2, and Discoverer M+S tires and I would buy them again.

I have a set of CS4 Tourings on my PT Cruiser (H rated). I have to agree with D.H. that these tires are incredibly quiet. I've put about 10,000 miles on them and they're wearing very well from what I can see (haven't checked the tread depth at this point). At the tail end of winter up here in the "great white north" last year they did a great job in the snow...very good traction. I have to say that I prefer them over the Goodyear Triple Treads that were on the car previously (those only lasted 43,000 miles and were noisy when new and even noiser the last 20,000 miles...terrific in the snow though). Cooper bet the bank on these tires and it shows...a very well designed and constructed tire.

good to know because I saw the CS4's and was considering it among others when I need tires probably next year. they look like a good tire. Never been incredibly thrilled with Goodyears at all. My Dodge Intrepid had Coopers on it when I bought it used back in 2004 and they did really well in the snow. Living in the North East, you gotta factor in snow. Can't remember which model Cooper's they were though. Weren't lifeliners, I know that. Trendsetters, that's what they were. The only thing I did not like was that they only had a 35 psi max pressure rating. would have liked to have run them a little more than that.

As others have stated, you don't mention which grade/quality level he's intrested in.

Someone mentioned Goodyear having better/stiffer sidewalls, from my observations, most Cooper have 2 poly sidewall +2 steel belts. Most Goodyear have 1 poly sidewall ply + 2 steel belts. I prefer full 4ply tread area.

Also, I've posted this on other threads here, but Cooper has no questions asked satasfaction, full purchase price replacement guarantee on CS4's for first 45 days.

Okay, I guess I should have mentioned the car-2006 Cobalt -195-60-15s, If I remember right (also the size of my Balt)


As far as what tire, he is open about that right now. He's not even sure if he wants a higher milage tire or not. (he kinda sounds like me and my Cavalier)


I'd go with whatever fits his Balt at this point....

Yep, I remember that... I'll have to remind him of that.


I like the CS4s myself, but wonder if it going to be too much for my Cav. I've considered another cooper tire, American Platinum, which is a private cooper tire sold at my local area Belle Tire......It reminds me of a mix of both Cs4 and lifeliner tire....

You won't find ratings for the CS4 on the TireRack site, but you will on some others like discount tire direct or tires test. Both of which give great reviews.

Try telephoning Cooper, 800-854-6288, and ask to speak with a tire engineer. If you get some good information, please let us all know what you get.

I phoned Cooper a few years ago and got good information. When I asked if Cooper's other brands...Dean, Mastercraft, etc., were as good as Cooper brand tires, he hedged and just said they were built in the same plant on the same floor. My impression was that Cooper brand tires are better.

In any case, I don't think Cooper's best are equal to GY, Michelin, Bridgestone's best. Goodyear is iffy, in any case. It took seven Tripletred tires to find four round ones for my car.
