Alright guys....I'm BITOG anal about fluids. I recently got the 08 BMW in my sig. Yesterday (at 76k) I replaced the power steering fluid reservoir (has integrated disc filter) and fluid with the expensive stuff CHF11S and bled the brakes with ATE 200. Brake bleed was ya ya. Power Steering was hilarious. I disconnected reservoir and set up a gallon jug to take old and connected the in line to take new fluid from the alum can of fresh 11s. Had friend start the car; all of 1/2 second that can of 11S was GONE!!! and the san SUCKED inside out! I was like WOAH!!! [censored]!!! that was quick.

Thought I would share the laugh. It was so quick I barely saw the fresh fluid coming through the out line into the jug. Shocked the SXXt outa me.

You're right....would only take a second!

If you turn the wheels with the engine off the rack will pump the old fluid out instead of bypassing the rack.
Honda will pump about as fast, don't ask how I know.

Smoky

And Honda also has a filter/strainer in the PS reservoir. Surely not the same same supplier as BMW??

Is that the service manual technique? I know for Honda power steering systems, the approved technique is to just bleed it (more or less) dry. The residual fluid is supposed to be enough to prevent damage to the pump and rack for the short time it takes to do it. It may or may not groan during the lock to lock (of course don't hold it there) turns to pump out fluid from the rack. Upon refilling the reservoir several times, the system purges itself of air in less than a minute.

I've heard of using an assistant to pour PSF into the reservoir while the system is being bled, but that seemed like it might waste fresh fluid. I know some are worried about air in the system, which some PS systems might be sensitive to.
