Does a 1996 Saturn really need collision and comprehensive? Is anyone really going to steal it?

in canada, no, in most parts of the USA - absolutely YES!

my neighbor's 88 escort rust bucket was stolen, people will steal anything - the question is - will paying for that coverage be worth more than the car?

That seems to be unusual. It's not true in this state, nor in any other that I'm aware of.

Now, if you want to register a car in this state, you must have insurance or pay the uninsured motor vehicle fee.

But for just having a license, no insurance is required.

How is the situation where someone wants to get a license but has no car handled in California? What do they get insurance on?

How old are you?

Also it depends on where you live and lastly driving record. Also interestingly your credit record is used to set your insurance premium in crazy ways.

State Farm is pricier of the bunch. Try an online Progressive quote and GEICO if available.

in 97 when I got my license (nj driving age is 17), I got put down on my parents policy for driving our 94 previa.

This is in NJ, the worst state for insurance, and with million dollar coverage all around.

I was paying ~$650/year!

The key is to be on the parents' policy.

24, lic 5 years, spotless, 750 credit score, just for liability they want me to pay $1650 a year, stick with your parents policy until you are atleast 30 if you live in Cali.

BrianL703, North Carolina now requires proof of insurance for teens getting their first driver's license. I know this because I work with several people who live south of the border and have teenage children.

Expect to see the auto insurance companies pushing this rule with state legislatures nationwide. It's too easy to allow a teen to get a license and let him/her get away with driving the family vehicles uninsured under the old system.

I don't expect to see the Virginia exemption from carrying insurance by paying the $500 annual fee surviving too much longer either. As the state insurance commissioner in California said some years ago (paraphrased), "If you can't afford auto insurance, perhaps that's a sign you shouldn't be driving."

Critic, if you're going to buy a car, buy something used that you don't have to finance. That'll change the whole insurance ballgame. You'll save BIGTIME by not having to carry collision and comprehensive, especially at your age.

Either way, it won't be financed, so its a non-issue.

Collision/Comp seem to be must-haves in my neighborhood esp for a driver like myself.

Besides, if I recall correctly, collision and comp and add minimal cost at best, since the new car, if any, will be insured under someone else's name.

You should double check your numbers, then. Here's what I'm paying. The first number is my '00 Monte Carlo, the second is my '05 Buick Terraza

code:

Injury and Prop. Damage Liability: $36 $31

PPI $10 $10

Comprehensive ($500 deductible) $43 $37

Collision ($500 deductible) $110 $111

Loan Payoff $34

Uninsured ($250/$500k) $9 $8

PIP (Excess Medical/Work Loss) $48 $43

Limited Property Damage ($500) $5 $5

Total $261 $279

There are $159 in other fees, too, but basically the collision and comprehensive make up 59% of the Monte Carlo and 53% of the Terraza. That's a significant chunk. Of course I'm double your age, so your numbers will vary, but I'll bet the percentages are similar.

Also, the rule on comprehensive and collision coverage is that you don't "need" it unless you're paying on a loan since the banks almost always require it. Personally, I'd say that you don't realistically need it if you can survive the loss of the car without a big financial hit. Don't view it as some sort of status symbol. It's dumb to carry those coverages if you don't need them. On older vehicles especially, it rarely makes sense. Financially, the odds are in your favor to drop those when they're not required.

You guys who think that you pay too much might want to get a quote from Safeco. My wife and I pay $1,369 a year to Farm Bureau. I just got an online quote from Safeco for the same coverage at $1,016 a year. They have a number of agents in our small town of about 30,000, so you should be able to find an agent to call about the quote, and possibly get it lower than the online quote. (Just use the agent-finder service on Safeco's website.) That's what I'm going to do. Will inform you of the quote from the agent after I talk to one on Tue. or Wed. of this week.

On that same note, I haven't found anyone that can beat Progressive. Not even close. I keep trying, but it hasn't happened in 3+ years of me being with them.

I think you might be right, just out of curiosity I went to get a quote and this is what they gave me

bodily in/property damage: 100k/300k/100k
unins motorist: 100k/300k
unins motorist prop damage: $3,500
medical payments: 5k/person (seems low to me)
no comprehensive or collision

quote is $88.09/month

add $500 ded for comprehensive and $2500 for collision and the payment is $121.43 a month

my question - if you don't have collision/comprehensive and you get into an accident and it is the other drivers fault then they have to pay for your car to be reiapired and all that right? and if it's your fault then you are SOL ?

right now I pay $44/month for liability from Bristol West Ins, not sure of the coverages though.

1200 a year for two vehicles.

98 4.6L v8 roush f150, 96 4.6L v8 ford thunderbird.

Full coverage, i'm 23, with one ticket.

West seneca ny (suburb of buffalo)

allstate is my carrier.

Pretty much but there are various states that have screwed around with the system enough that I couldn't say 100%.

Incidentally if you do have comp and collission you should have a $2000 deductible or so. Making a $700 claim for your own scratched fender is foolish, the company will remember that and get the money back in your premiums over the next couple years.

Comparing rates is silly. Every person posting has different age, location, vehicles, insurance company, credit rating, and driving record. You CANNOT compare rates.

I'm presently getting reamed by State Farm.

I did it at insurance.com and they gave me safeco for 116/6 month for 100k/300k/100k liability.

Comparing rates is NOT silly. The rates vary quite a bit from company to company for the same coverage for the same person with the same background. Its like buying many things. If you shop around, you might get a better deal. I just today got an online quote for $353 a year less than I'm paying. I'm going to follow up on it with an agent for the company that gave me the online quote.
