Interesting prog-rock anecdote: I once saw a girl (don't know if she was drunk) at a Rush concert.

I don't want to hijack the thread nor denigrate Pablo's account of a great show; but I have been itching to say or type these words for years and have never found the opportunity until just now. Here goes: Best prog-rock band of all time = Gentle Giant. That is all.

I'm a diehard prog-rocker. Probably because I studied classical piano as a kid. Anyway, my prog rock band list goes something like:

Yes
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
Genesis
Kansas

all 4 pretty much in a 4-way tie, and then in no particular order:

Marillion
UK (anyone even remember them?)
Asia
Gentle Giant
Uriah Heep
and, I'm ashamed to admit, Styx (just the songs Dennis DeYoung did NOT write...)


You have a great list there. We share similar tastes in music. I would also add King Crimson,Camel and Saga to that list. I have always been a big Yes fan and Asia. I purchased Asia XXX and I think that it is probably their best work.

Pardon me while I give myself a huge forehead smack. I'm a Crimson fan as well- they might not make the top 4, but they'd definitely be in the rest of the list. In pretty much all their incarnations.

Oh, and throw in stuff like all of Steve Hackett's solo catalog, too.

Last time I saw them was in '91 on the Union tour when 'both' Yes bands were on the same stage. Cool to see Bill Bruford in concert.

I saw them last around 2002. They mostly did the songs from Magnification

I was a little disappointed.

I know Magnification is a highly regarded album but I just didn't like it that much

The 90125 show in '84 was better to me. They did play a lot of the then new album, but it was better interspersed with the classics.

I really didn't like either 'Magnification' or 'Open Your Eyes.' I bought them, but wish I hadn't (and have never even bothered to digitize them.) They seemed to go through a phase of very uninteresting music that really accentuated Anderson being off-key all the time. Makes my ears hurt.

The last time I actually saw Yes live was on the 'Big Generator' tour back in the 80s. No Howe, but Rabin could *sing* and that really helped their sound in that era. I miss having him writing mainstream music, but he's done some great movie scores since then.

Come to think of it, thats about the last time I saw Rush live, also- on the "Power Windows" tour. The only arena-filling bands I've seen in recent years have been Coldplay and Trans-Siberian Orchestra (the west touring group with Al Pitrelli). My daughter is a big Coldplay fan, and I have to admit that I like them quite a lot myself. But I've learned that I'm old enough now so that I really *need* earplugs in order to hear arena-sized sound clearly and undistorted. :-/

I went to Rush's Time Machine tour in 2010 with my late brother-in-law. It was totally worth it. The crowd was overwhelmingly our age. (A few 20-somethings but at least they had good taste in music)
